2018-01-29 por The collection of the Museu Oceanográfico D. Carlos I is a historical specimen, instrument and document collection that has been housed at the Aquário Vasco da Gama since 1935. The ornithological collection is made up of 189 surviving records, consisting of mounted specimens and eggs. All specimens were caught in Portugal, except for the two Polysticta stelleri (Pallas, 1769) specimens, offered to D. Carlos I by Edward VII of the United Kingdom. The specimens were captured between 1888 and 1906, as part of the king's hunting parties and oceanographic campaigns. Most specimens were collected south of the Cabo da Roca, and in the Berlengas archipelago, especially in the Tagus estuary (Lezíria) and mouth, and along the Guadiana. Two specimens were caught to the north of the Cabo da Roca, in Figueira da Foz. One specimen has ambiguous locality data, as official toponymy implies it was captured in Vila Franca, Viana do Castelo, but vernacular toponymy allows for at least two other possible localities. Two specimens, gifted by king Edward VII of the United Kingdom, do not have locality data. -9.75 -6.85 41.5 36.75 1888-05-01 1906-02-28 The collection is entirely made up of specimens in the class Aves. The orders Accipitriformes, Gaviiformes and Phoenicopteriformes are each represented by a single species. There are 10 orders and 20 families represented. Of 188 records, 186 are identified to the species level and 2 to the genus level, representing a total of 54 genera, and 74 species. One record is identified only to the class level, and it is comprised of unidentified eggs. kingdom Animalia phylum Chordata class Aves order Accipitriformes family Pandionidae genus Pandion species Pandion haliaetus order Anseriformes family Anatidae genus Anas species Anas acuta species Anas platyrhynchos genus Aythya species Aythya fuligula species Aythya nyroca genus Mareca species Mareca penelope genus Marmaronetta species Marmaronetta angustirostris genus Melanitta species Melanitta nigra genus Mergus species Mergus serrator genus Polysticta species Polysticta stelleri genus Somateria species Somateria mollisima genus Spatula species Spatula clypeata species Spatula querquedula genus Tadorna species Tadorna ferruginea species Tadorna tadorna order Charadriiformes family Alcidae genus Alca species Alca torda genus Fratercula species Fratercula arctica genus Uria species Uria aalge family Charadriidae genus Charadrius species Charadrius alexandrinus species Charadrius dubius species Charadrius hiaticula genus Pluvialis species Pluvialis apricaria species Pluvialis squatarola family Glareolidae genus Glareola species Glareola pratincola family Haematopodidae genus Haematopus species Haematopus ostralegus family Laridae genus Chlidonias species Chlidonias niger genus Gelochelidon species Gelochelidon nilotica genus Hydrocoloeus species Hydrocoloeus minutus genus Larus species Larus argentatus species Larus andouinii species Larus fuscus species Larus marinus species Larus melanocephalus species Larus ridibundus genus Rissa species Rissa tridactyla genus Sterna species Sterna hirundo genus Sternula species Sternula albifrons genus Thalasseus species Thalasseus sandvicensis family Recurvirostridae genus Recurvirostra species Recurvirostra avosetta family Scolopacidae genus Actitis species Actitis hypoleucos genus Arenaria species Arenaria interpres genus Calidris species Calidris alba species Calidris alpina species Calidris canutus genus Limosa species Limosa limosa genus Numenius species Numenius arquata species Numenius phaeopus genus Tringa species Tringa nebularia species Tringa ochropus species Tringa totanus family Stercorariidae genus Stercorarius species Stercorarius parasiticus order Gaviiformes family Gaviidae genus Gavia species Gavia immer order Gruiformes family Rallidae genus Fulica species Fulica atra genus Gallinula species Gallinula chloropus genus Rallus species Rallus aquaticus order Pelecaniformes family Ardeidae genus Ardea species Ardea cinerea species Ardea purpurea genus Botaurus species Botaurus stellaris genus Bubulcus species Bubulcus ibis genus Egretta species Egretta garzetta genus Ixobrychus species Ixobrychus minutus genus Nycticorax species Nycticorax nycticorax family Threskiornithidae genus Platalea species Platalea leucorodia genus Plegadis species Plegadis falcinellus order Phoenicopteriformes family Phoenicopteridae genus Phoenicopterus species Phoenicopterus roseus order Podicipediformes family Podicipedidae genus Podiceps species Podiceps cristatus species Podiceps nigricollis genus Tachybaptus species Tachybaptus ruficollis order Procellariiformes family Hydrobatidae genus Hydrobates species Hydrobates pelagicus family Procellariidae genus Calonectris species Calonectris diomedia genus Puffinus species Puffinus puffinus order Suliformes family Phalacrocoracidae genus Phalacrocorax species Phalacrocorax aristotelis species Phalacrocorax carbo family Sulidae genus Morus species Morus bassanus unkown Paula Leandro Aquário Vasco da Gama Curator

The work consisted of cross checking the card and electronic catalogues for transcription errors. Once the cross checking was completed, recorded species names were checked for synonymy using the Handbook of the Birds of the World Alive (del Hoyo et al., 2017). Generate a Darwin Core compatible electronic catalogue with all verified information. The specimens in D. Carlos's ornithological specimens were captured in Portugal, mostly from the Berlengas archipelago to the Algarve. Two specimens were caught north of the Berlengas, in Figueira da Foz. One specimen has an ambiguous locality datum depending on whether official or vernacular toponymy was used. There are two specimens of Steller's eiders caught outside Portugal, gifted to D. Carlos I by Edward VII of the United Kingdom. The specimens were captured as part of D. Carlos's hunting parties, and also during his oceanographic expeditions, starting in 1896 (Ceríaco, 2014). There are no surviving records of the sampling methods used, as all documents pertaining to the bird collection are drafts of the Catalogo Illustrado das Aves de Portugal (Bragança 1903), and correspondence, including letters from Prof. Paulino de Oliveira (Ferreira 1987). The validity of species' names was checked using the Handbook of the Birds of the World Alive (del Hoyo et al., 2017). Revisão Taxonómica das Coleções Ornitológicas do Aquário Vasco da Gama Ana Serra Silva 0000-0001-8020-3227 author The aim of the project was to compile a taxonomically updated electronic catalogue of the ornithological specimens, compatible with the Darwin Core standard. No funding was used. The specimens in D. Carlos's ornithological specimens were captured in Portugal, mostly from the Berlengas archipelago to the Algarve. Exceptions include two Steller's eiders, gifted to D. Carlos I by Edward VII of the United Kingdom. The work consisted of checking the recorded species names for synonymy, and making the existing electronic catalogue Darwin Core compatible.
