2020-10-02 eng The dataset contains records of Iberian Wolf (Canis lupus), Wild Boar (Sus scrofa) and Roe Deer (Capreolus capreolus) collected in the lower valley of River Sabor (NE Portugal), in the scope of the long-term Ecological Monitoring Program (PME) of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams (AHBS), promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. This dataset includes results of surveys made in and around the area affected by the dams, from March 2011 to August 2014. Sampling was performed by camera-traps distributed along the lower Sabor river valley (and some tributaries) and in rivers Maçãs and Angueira, from the river mouth up to 42 km upstream. The presence and identity of the target species were assessed by observing the photos taken with the cameras. A total of 3879 photos of the target species were obtained (2892 of Sus scrofa, 982 of Capreolus capreolus, and 5 of Canis lupus). These numbers do not necessarily refer to different individuals. To be completed The data were collected in 38 5x5 km squares established in the lower Sabor river valley, its tributaries and in the rivers Maçãs and Angueira, from the river mouth up to 42 km upstream, in the municipalities of Torre de Moncorvo, Alfândega da Fé, Mogadouro and Macedo de Cavaleiros. The municipality(ies) identification presented are those corresponding to the 5x5 km squares, not to the cameras locations. Sampling was designed to cover the whole valley of the lower Sabor river, its tributaries and the rivers Maçãs and Angueira, with particular emphasis on locations where the presence or wolves were previously confirmed or suspected. A total of 76 automatic cameras was established in the study area (two per 5x5 km square). Each camera was set up for a maximum of three months per season, being inspected at the end of each month. Due to the high level of theft, damage or destruction, even with regular replacements, several squares end up losing all or part of their cameras, and the total number of cameras deployed decreased over time. The dataset provides the total number of photos per species and per square for each 3-month period, taken by the set of cameras in the square. All individual identifications were performed by qualified technicians EDP Baixo Sabor: Construction and Reservoir Filling Phases – Wolf, (Canis lupus) Wild Boar (Sus scrofa) and Roe Deer (Capreolus capreolus) [camera-trapping] - [2011-2014] Mota Paulo author José Vítor Vingada author Joana Ferreira author Hugo Manuel Diogo author Rui Guilherme Morgado author Pedro Rodrigues author Nuno Garrido author Catarina Isabel Eira author Nuno Pinto author Carina Marques author Tiago Múrias metadataProvider The dataset contains records of Iberian Wolf (Canis lupus) and its two main natural prey species, Wild Boar (Sus scrofa) and Roe Deer (Capreolus capreolus) (Mammalia) collected in the lower valley of River Sabor (NE Portugal), and in rivers Maçãs and Angueira, in the scope of the long-term Ecological Monitoring Program (PME) of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams (AHBS), promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. This dataset includes results of camera-trapping made between March 2011 and August 2014. Sampling was performed on a seasonal basis, with a total of 76 cameras, two in each of the 38 5x5 km squares established in the study area. The occurrence of the target species was documented by positive identification of the photos taken through camera trapping. The work was funded by EDP - Energias de Portugal, S.A. The study was conducted in part of the sub-basin of river Sabor affected by the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dam. The sampling was carried out in suitable habitats for Iberian Wolf and its main wild prey species, the Wild Boar and the Roe Deer, in the lower Sabor river valley and some tributaries, ands in rivers Maçãs and Angueira, from the river mouth up to 42 km upstream. The objective of the study was to detect the presence of the target species and to monitor changes in their distribution patterns in the area of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams during the construction and the reservoir filling periods (2010-2014).
