The dataset contains records of Pyrenean desman (Galemys pyrenaicus, Mammalia) collected in the Rivers Tua and Douro sub-basins and included in the Ecological Monitoring Program (2011-17) of the Environmental Impact Assessment of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected between June 2011 and May 2017 during field visits to up to 30 sampling transects in the riverbeds of the selected water lines with favorable habitats for the species. The presence of individuals was recorded by direct observation of signs (scats and/or footprints).

The data were collected in selected sampling points in the rivers Tua and Douro sub-basins (Northeast Portugal), including the whole course of river Tua and its main tributaries, and the downstream stretches of rivers Pinhão, Távora and Torto and Linhares stream, in the Douro sub-basin, in the municipalities of Carrazeda de Ansiães, Vila Flor, Alijó, Murça, Mirandela, Tabuaço and S. João da Pesqueira.

The data were collected in the rivers Douro and Tua sub-basins, in the municipalities of Carrazeda de Ansiães, Vila Flor, Alijó, Murça and Mirandela, Bragança, São João da Pesqueira e Tabuaço.
Sampling was designed to cover the course of the lower river Tua and its main tributaries from the mouth up to the northern limit of the Foz-Tua dam, and the downstream part of the four Douro tributaries, up to 5 km. Up to 30 sampling transects were setup in the Tua sub-basin and one more was located in each of the four Douro tributaries. Each transect up to 500 m was performed along the margins, looking for signs of presence (mostly scats) in suitable places (prominent stones and vegetation in the margins of the water line). The transect was interrupted when the presence of the Pyrenean desman was detected, and the time and distance recorded. Each plot was visited twice in spring (May-June) and autumn (October-November) in dry or light rain periods to minimize the chance of leaching of the fecal material. The scats potentially attributed to the species were stored and taken to the laboratory for molecular identification.
All identifications were performed by qualified technicians

The dataset contains records of Pyrenean desman (Galemys pyrenaicus, Mammalia) collected in transects along lower rivers Tua and Douro sub-basins, and included in theEcological monitoring Program of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected between June 2011 and May 2017, during field visits to up to 30 sampling transects with favorable habitats for Pyrenean desman located in the lower river Tua and some tributaries, and in rivers Tuela and Rabaçal, as well as in four tributaries of the Douro river (rivers Pinhão, Távora and Torto and Linhares stream). The occurrence of the target taxa was documented through 180 observations of scats identified as belonging to the target species.
The work was funded by EDP - Energias de Portugal, S.A.
The study was conducted in part of the sub-basin of river Tua affected by the Foz-Tua Hydroelectric Dam and in control areas upstream, as well as on four main affluents of the Douro river located near the Tua mouth (rivers Pinhão, Távora and Torto, and Linhares stream). The sampling was centered in suitable habitats for the otter in a 5 km radius buffer around the target water lines. In the Tua sub-basin, sampling occurred to a lenght of up to 35 km from the Tua mouth. In the Douro tributaries, to a maximum distance of 5 km upstream.
The objective of the study was to monitor changes in the distribution patterns and abundances of the Pyrenean desman in the area of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam during the dam construction (2011-2015) and the subsequent flooding period (2016-2017). Additional sampling took place in some rivers of the Douro sub-basin located around the Tua mouth to test for the potential effects of isolation between the two sub-basins populations before the implementation of the dam.
