The dataset contains records of the Black Wheatear (Oenanthe leucura, Aves) and other terrestrial birds collected in an area with suitable habitat for the species in the lower Tua valley and included in the Ecological Monitoring Program (2011-12) of the Environmental Impact Assessment of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected in the winter of 2011 and in the spring of 2012, during field visits to seven transects distributed in the sampling area. All observations were made with binoculars and/or telescopes.

To be completed
The data were collected in a main area of roughly 4x4 km around the mouth of river Tua and in a subsidiary area located upstream, closer to Mirandela, with favorable habitat conditions for the species (Northeast Portugal), up to 45 km from the mouth, in the municipalities of Alijó, Carrazeda de Ansiães, Mirandela and Vila Flor.
Sampling was designed to cover the main known or potential habitats for the Black Wheatear along the lower Tua valley affected by the Foz-Tua dam (the mouth) and upstream. A total of seven line transects was established in the selected area, covering the most important habitats for the species (vineyards and traditional olive-orchards). All transects were sampled once in the winter and 1-2 times in the reproductive period (spring), in the early morning or late afternoon. Each transect was walked on foot at a constant speed of 1-2 km/h and lasted no less than 30 minutes. Playback songs were used to locate the territorial (and vagrant) birds. Species identification and assessment of age and sex (when possible) were made “in loco”.
All identifications were performed by qualified technicians.

EDP Biodiversity Data
The study was conducted in a main an area of roughly 4x4 km, centered around the mouth of the Tua river and in a subsidiary area located upstream, closer to Mirandela, with favorable habitat conditions for the species.
The objective of the study was to monitor changes in the distribution patterns and abundance of the black Wheatear in the lower valley of the river Tua, to assess the potential effects on the species of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dan, during the dam construction (2011-2015) and flooding (2016-17). The transects were discontinued after 2012, being replaced by point counts.
