2020-04-24 eng The dataset contains records of otter (Lutra lutra, Mammalia) collected in the Rivers Tua and Douro sub-basins and included in the Complementary Studies (2009-10) of the Environmental Impact Assessment of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected in February 2010 during field visits to 41 sampling points with favorable habitats in 16 10x10 km UTM squares in the river Tua sub-basin and in five sampling points in the river Douro, close to the the Tua mouth. The presence of individuals was recorded by direct observation of signs (scats). otter; Lutra lutra occurrence; observations; scats GBIF Dataset Type Vocabulary: http://rs.gbif.org/vocabulary/gbif/dataset_type.xml This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY) 4.0 License. To be completed The data were collected in the river Tua sub-basin and in a section of river Douro sub-basin near the tua's mouth (about 15 km to the south), in the municipalities of Carrazeda de Ansiães, Alijó, Vila Flor, Murça, Mirandela, Macedo de Cavaleiros, Valpaços, Vila Pouca de Aguiar, S. João da Pesqueira and Tabuaço. Sampling was designed to cover the course of river Tua and its main tributaries, from the spring to the mouth, and a portion of river Douro and the mouths of its tributaries located in the vicinity of river Tuah. The same grid of 10x10 km squares sampled in the last otter national census (Trindade et al., 1998) was used to sample the Tua's sub-basin. In each square, two sampling plots were randomly established in the selected water line(s). In each sampling point, a transect of 200-600 m was performed along the margins, looking for signs of presence (mostly scats) in suitable places (prominent stones and vegetation in the margins of the water line). Each plot was visited once in February 2010, in dry or light rain periods, to minimize the chance of leaching of the feacal material. The scats were identified "in loco" by expert researchers. All identifications were performed by qualified technicians EDP Foz Tua Otter (Lutra lutra) - Complementary Studies [2010] David da Fonte author Margarida Santos-Reis author Nuno Pedroso author Suze Chora author Tiago Múrias metadataProvider The dataset contains records of otter (Lutra lutra, Mammalia) collected in plots along rivers Tua and Douro sub-basins and included in the Complementary Studies of the Environmental Impact Assessment of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected in February 2010, during field visits to 46 sampling plots with favorable habitats for otter located in 16 10x10 km UTM squares in the river Tua sub-basin (41) and in river Douro in the vicinity of Tua mouth (five plots). The occurrence of the target taxa was documented through 27 observations of scats identified as belonging to the target species. The work was funded by EDP - Energias de Portugal, S.A. The study was conducted in the sub-basins of river Tua, prior to the construction of the Foz-Tua Hydroelectric Dam, and river Douro. The sampling was centered in suitable habitats for otter in sampling points distributed on 16 10x10 km UTM squares, covering the main course of river Tua and its main tributaries (two plots per square). In addition, five plots were sampled in river Douro, in and around the Tua mouth (one to the north - Linhares stream - and four to the south - rivers Távora, Pinhão, Torto and mouth of river Tua). The objective of the study was to characterize and update the distribution of the otter in the river Tua's sub-basin before the dam construction, to gather quality data to support the design and implementation of mitigation and/or compensation measures. A set of five additional points was sampled in river Douro and its tributaries around the Tua mouth, to establish the baseline for the study of the connectivity between Tua and Douro's otter populations.
