2020-02-18 eng The dataset contains records of riparian birds (Aves) collected in the lower valley of the River Tua and included in the Ecological Monitoring Program (2011-17) of the Environmental Impact Assessment of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected in the winter of 2012-2017, and in the spring of 2011-2017 during field visits to five (2011-2014) or seven (2015-2017) transects located in the riverbeds of the lower Tua valley, in the area affected by the dam, and in a control area, upstream. All observations were made with binoculars and/or telescopes. To be completed The data were collected within a 5-km buffer around the Tua lower valley (Northeast Portugal), up to 45 km from the mouth, in the municipalities of Alijó, Carrazeda de Ansiães, Murça, Mirandela and Vila Flor. Sampling was designed to cover the main habitats for riparian and aquatic birds along the lower Tua valley affected by the Foz-Tua dam. A total of seven line transects was established in the flooded area and in control points upstream, along the river Tua. All transects were sampled once in winter (only from 2012 onward) and twice in the reproductive period (spring), in the early morning or late afternoon. Each transect was walked on foot at a constant speed of 1-2 km/h and lasted no less than 30 minutes. Species identification and assessment of age and sex (when possible) were made “in loco”, with the help of appropriate field guides. All identifications were performed by qualified technicians EDP Foz-Tua: Riparian Birds (transects) - Ecological Monitoring Program [2011-17] Hugo Costa author Nuno Salgueiro author Ana Teresa Marques author Helena Coelho author Hugo Zina author Emanuel Ribeiro author Rui Pedroso author Helder Cardoso author Luís Queirós author João Paula author João Alexandre Cabral author Paulo Travassos Regina Santos author Diogo Carvalho author Carla Gomes author Tiago Múrias metadataProvider The dataset contains records of riparian birds (Aves) collected in transects along the lower Tua River valley and included in the Ecological Monitoring Program of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected between June 2011 and June 2017 during field visits to five (2011-2011-2014) or seven (>2014) sampling transects with favorable habitats for riparian birds along the lower Tua River valley. The occurrence of the target taxa was documented through 349 observation events. In total, 5899 observations were identified to the species rank. The most abundant species were Fringilla coelebs (939 occurrences), Erithacus rubecula (574), Sylvia atricapilla (467), Parus major (334). Turdus philomelos (333) and Sylvia melanocephala (312). The work was funded by EDP - Energias de Portugal, S.A. The study was conducted in the sub-basin of river Tua affected by the Foz-Tua Hydroelectric Dam, and in control areas upstream. The sampling was centered in suitable habitats for riparian birds in the riverbeds of Tua river lower valley up to 45 km from the Tua mouth. The objective of the study was to monitor changes in the distribution patterns and abundances of species of riparian birds in the area of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, prior to (2011) and during (2011-2015) the dam construction, and during/after the flooding (2016-2017).
