The dataset contains one record of the species Borkhausenia crimnodes (Lepidoptera, Oecophoridae) collected in continental Portugal in 2014. This species, a southern hemisphere moth, had not been recorded in Europe before. The specimen was detected and captured by direct search of the environment and preserved in 96% ethanol. A tissue sample, one leg, was removed to be used for DNA extraction. Sequencing of the 658 bp COI DNA barcode was conducted within the InBIO Barcoding Initiative (IBI) and the DNA sequence was submitted to BOLD (Barcode of Life Data System) and GenBank databases. The preserved specimen and DNA extract are deposited in the IBI collection at the CIBIO (Research Center in Biodiversity and Genetic Resources).

The Borkhausenia crimnodes specimen was captured in a single locality of continental Portugal, during 2014.
The specimen was captured by direct search of the environment. The captured specimen was preserved in 96% ethanol.
The specimen was morphologically identified using a binocular stereoscopic microscope and resorting to available literature (Meyrick, 1912).
A DNA barcode was sequenced from a tissue sample, one leg, that was removed. DNA was then extracted, and a 658 bp COI DNA barcode fragment was amplified and sequenced.
The obtained sequence was submitted to BOLD and GenBank databases and the specimen morphological identification was contrasted with the results of the BLAST of the newly generated DNA barcode in BOLD Identification Engine.
Prior submission to GBIF, data was checked for errors and inconsistencies with OpenRefine 3.3 (http://openrefine.org/).
A single specimen was collected in Louriçal, in Continental Portugal, in 2014.
The Borkhausenia crimnodes specimen was captured in continental Portugal in 2014, by direct search of the environment. The captured specimen was preserved in 96% ethanol and stored at the InBIO Barcoding Initiative reference collection for downstream molecular analysis. The collected specimen was morphologically identified.
The DNA barcoded specimen morphological identification was contrasted with the results of the Blast of the newly generated DNA barcode in BOLD Identification Engine. Prior submission to GBIF, data was checked for errors and inconsistencies with OpenRefine 3.3 (http://openrefine.org/).

The InBIO Barcoding Initiative aims to develop a reference collection of DNA barcoding sequences covering Portuguese taxa. Within the project, a special focus is afforded to insects, given their relevance to food webs, ecosystems functioning, high diversity and limited number of DNA barcoding sequences of interest.
InBIO Barcoding Initiative is funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation programme under grant agreement No 668981 and by the project PORBIOTA — Portuguese E-Infrastructure for Information and Research on Biodiversity (POCI-01-0145-FEDER-022127), supported by Operational Thematic Program for Competitiveness and Internationalization (POCI), under the PORTUGAL 2020 Partnership Agreement, through the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER).
A single specimen was collected in Louriçal, Pombal, part of the Leiria District of Continental Portugal, in 2014.
The specimen in this dataset was collected in a single locality in Continental Portugal. It was detected by direct search of the environment.
