Luís Filipe Lopes llopes@museus.ulisboa.pt user 2019-11-13 eng The Instituto de Investigação Científica Tropical hosts a collection of horseflies (Order Diptera, Family Tabanidae) collected by J. A. Travassos Santos Dias and other researchers, mainly in Portugal and during several expeditions to Angola, Mozambique and São Tomé and Príncipe in the decades of 1940 to 1980. The collection consists of 1319 specimens and includes type specimens of species described by Travassos Santos Dias, as well as species with little distribution data available online. The collection includes specimens collected in 24 countries of Europe, Africa, South America and Asia. The most represented countries are Portugal (674 records, 51.1% of total), São Tomé and Príncipe (270 records, 20.5%), Guinea-Bissau (96 records, 7.3%) and Mozambique (73 records, 5.5%). -180 180 90 -90 1899-01-01 2018-07-13 The collection includes specimens of the Class Insecta, Order Diptera, Family Tabanidae. 28 Genera are represented, of which the most common are Tabanus (751 records, 56.9%), Haematopota (200 records, 15.2%), Ancala (41 records, 3.1%) and Atylotus (41 records, 3.1%). The most represented species are Tabanus monocallosus (260 records, 19.7%), Haematopota italica (78 records, 5.9%) and Tabanus eggeri (68 records, 5.2%). 1144 specimens (86.7%) are identified to the Species level, 138 (10.5%) to the Family, 33 (2.5%) to the Genus and 4 (0.3%) to the Subspecies. family Tabanidae order Diptera unkown Luís Filipe Lopes IHMT Researcher

All specimens were photographed and reviewed to confirm taxonomic information where available. Available collection and taxonomic information was digitized from labels and registry books. All records were reviewed for data quality control. Specimens of the Tabanidae collection of the Instituto de Investigação Científica Tropical, collected during expeditions in Portugal, Angola, Mozambique, São Tomé and Príncipe and other locations. Specimens were sampled during expeditions conducted by the Instituto de Investigação Científica Tropical.
