Data were collected between November 2009 and March 2010 during field visits to 440 sampling points with favourable habitats in 20 2x2 km UTM squares on the area of the lower Tua valley directly or indirectly affected by the Foz Tua dam. The presence of individuals was recorded mainly through the detection presence signs such as scats. To be completed The data were collected within a 5-km buffer around the lower Tua River valley (Northeast Portugal) up to 50 km from the mouth, in the municipalities of Carrazeda de Ansiães, Alijó, Vila Flor, Murça and Mirandela. Sampling was designed to cover the main habitat types for the target mammal species in and around the lower Tua River valley affected by the Foz-Tua dam (including the reservoir area). Each sampling plot was visited once in the winter (November-March) of 2009-10. All habitats were searched for identifiable signs of presence (feaces, latrines, scats, footprints) of the target species. Species identifications were made "in situ", with the help of appropriate field guides. All identifications were performed by qualified technicians. Data were collected between November 2009 and March 2010, during field visits to 440 sampling plots with favourable habitats for the target species within a 5-km buffer around the lower Tua River valley. The occurrence of the target taxa was documented through 157 observation events (mostly scats) in 156 sampling points. In total, nine taxa were identified to species rank. The most abundant species (>10 records of presence) were Vulpes vulpes (82), Sus scrofa (50), Mustela nivalis and Genetta genetta (15). The work was funded by EDP - Energias de Portugal, S.A. The study was conducted in part of the sub-basins of river Tua, prior to the construction and subsequent flooding of the lower part of this river valley by the Foz-Tua Hydroelectric Dam. The sampling was centered in suitable habitats for the target species found in a 5-km radius buffer around the future reservoir banks, and up to 50 km from the Tua mouth. The objective of the study was to characterize the fauna of large and medium-sized mammals in a buffer of 5 km around the Tua lower valley before the dam construction, and to gather quality data to support the design and implementation of mitigation and/or compensation measures.
