Description

The checklist of vascular plants of Portugal, including Mainland Portugal, Azores and Madeira, was published in 2012 by ALFA (Associação Lusitana de Fitossociologia), and adopted formally by the Instituto de Conservação da Natureza e da Biodiversidade (presently ICNF). The checklist covers Continental Portugal, Azores and Madeira. It includes a total of 3995 taxa (including infraspecific taxa), of which 3314 are for Mainland Portugal, 1006 for Azores and 1233 for Madeira. These taxa are distributed among 185 families and 1066 genera. The checklist also includes establishment means, identifying native, introduced of endemic taxa.

Data Records

The data in this checklist resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 3,994 records.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Versions

The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Sampling Methods

The taxonomic and nomenclatural criteria for accepted taxa were, primarily, the ones proposed in the published volumes of the Flora Ibérica (Castroviejo et al. 1986-2010) and Nova Flora de Portugal (Franco, 1971, 1984; Franco & Rocha Afonso, 1994, 1998, 2003. With respect to the reviews of genera not yet published by Flora Iberica or corresponding to endemic (Madeira or Macaronesian), it was followed the Flora of Madeira (Press & Short eds. 1994) criterion. There were still considered latter additions (by example, the publication of new taxa) to the publication date of those works, as well as some exceptions in which the taxonomic criteria reflect the opinion of other authors, namely reviewers of genera and the hecklist of Vascular Plants of Macaronesia de Hansen & Sunding (1993), the flórula of Selvagens published by Monod (1990), as well as the latest publications of Rivas-Martínez et al. (2002) and Costa et al. (2004). In order to maintain the homogeneity with the main taxonomic standard, ie, to Flora Iberica (Castroviejo et al. 1986-2010), the organization of families followed the proposed model for that work. Therefore, conncerning pteridophytes, it was followed the supra-family arrangement proposed by Pichi Sermolli (1977); in gymnosperms (Pinopsida and Gnetopsida) it was followed the arrangement of families proposed by Mabberley (1997) based on Kubitzki (1990), albeit with slight modifications; angiosperms, in the supra-family approach, is based on Stebbins (1974). This supra-family arrangement is in fact not very different from that adopted by Press & Short (1994) for the Flora of Madeira. As in Flora Iberica, are accepted as independent the Asclepiadaceae and Amaryllidaceae families, the Papaveraceae are included in Fumariaceae and in the Convolvulaceae are included in the Cuscutaceae. Taxa are considered naturalized only if occurring in natural and semi-natural habitats, establishing and propagating by vegetative or sexual reproduction. Thus, there were excluded all cultivated taxa or the ones used for landscaping purposes, either in forest or in agriculture, that temporarily persist in environments much altered by humans. The accepted name of each taxon is followed by the abbreviation of the name of the author [following Brummitt & Powell 1992; International Plant Names Index (IPNI) http://www.ipni.org/index.html]. The list of pteridophytes and spermatophytes is based only on published and therefore verifiable information. Unpublished information, either with respect to taxonomic aspects, whether with regard to the distribution, is not included because it is not considered reliable.
