Description

This dataset is based on the Atlas of Freshwater Bivalves in Mainland Portugal published by ICNF in 2006. It presents occurrence data of native and exotic freshwater bivalves on water bodies in hundreds of sampling stations at Mainland Portugal, from 2001 to 2004. There are records of 12 native species and one exotic with confirmed occurrence in Portugal, namely Corbicula fluminea (O. F. Müller, 1774). The project "Atlas of freshwater bivalves in mainland Portugal" was coordinated by Joaquim Reis and involved the participation of several individual and institutional collaborators.

Data Records

The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 3,167 records.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Versions

The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Project Data

The project “Atlas dos bivalves de água doce em Portugal continental” aimed to assess the distribution of freshwater bivalves in mainland Portugal. The distribution is related to 13 species, being 12 natives and one exotic in the country.

Title Atlas dos bivalves de água doce em Portugal continental
Identifier POA 1.100021
Funding This work was co-fund by ICNF, I.P. and the European Union, through the Environment Operational Programme (application 1.1/00021– Documentos Estruturantes da Conservação da Natureza e da Biodiversidade). The preparation of this resource for publication through GBIF was supported by Project PORBIOTA—Portuguese E-Infrastructure for Information and Research on Biodiversity (POCI-01-0145-FEDER-022127), under the Operational Thematic Program for Competitiveness and Internationalization (POCI), under the PORTUGAL 2020 Partnership Agreement, through the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER) and FCT.

Sampling Methods

The data was obtained for the elaboration of the Atlas, with the survey of the species distribution at Mainland Portugal. At each location the survey of the freshwater bivalves were performed using specific techniques for detecting their presence or absence. Whenever possible, the abundance of each species was assessed. Data collection of the occurrence was also based on previous publications. All data was inserted in a specific database build for the project.

Study Extent The geographic area considered for the study was Mainland Portugal. Since there is some cross-border data, some registers were made in Spain.
Quality Control All initial data was inserted in a specific relational database built specifically for the project, which implemented several quality control methods. In the preparation of the dataset for GBIF publication, data consistency was verified using cluster algorithms using OpenRefine.

Method step description:

  1. The dataset presents information of the occurrence status (presence or absence) of the species in each location. There are also classes of abundance for these species, as following: absent = value 0; rare = value 1; common = value 2; abundant = value 3; very abundant = value 4. In some cases, the presence of a species was recorded in a locality, however was not possible to assess its abundance. Aggregation of original data from several sources (see above) into a purpose specific relational database built for the project. For details, see Reis (2006). The preparation of the dataset for GBIF publication used as source the geographic layer in shapefile format. The data layer was a vector layer containing points. The following steps were performed: - Conversion of the spatial layer to geographic coordinates using WGS84 as reference system; - Used the points to determine the locations based on the Carta Administrativa Oficial de Portugal 2020 (CAOP2020) and OpenStreetMaps; - Exported to csv, unpivot the data in the table and reinterpreted attributes matching to DwC standard terms.
