Descrição
This dataset presents the distribution and diversity of epilithic diatoms collected in two field campaings at Deserta Grande Island (Madeira archipelago, Portugal).
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Descrição da Área de Estudo | Desertas subarchipelago is formed by three uninhabited small islets belonging to the Madeira Archipelago located 20 km southeast of Madeira Island. Deserta Grande is the largest of the three islets, with an area of approximately 10 km2 and a maximum altitude of 479 m. The Deserta Grande geomorphology is mostly rugged, with very steep slopes, ridges and peaks. The climate is temperate oceanic and the predominant habitats are rocky slopes and small arid flatlands, with sparse vegetation. Although fauna and flora of Desertas Islands are regarded as interesting and with high conservation value, freshwater biota was never study. Freshwater habitats are reduced to temporary streams in Vale da Castanheira. |
Descrição do Design | Several freshwater habitats were sampled during two field campaigns in Deserta Grande, in 2013 and 2014. Diatom samples were collected by filtering water or by brushing the bottom and walls of the pools or stream bed. Samples were treated with warm nitric acid and mounted with Naphrax©. Diatoms slides were examined under 1000x magnification using a light microscope ZEISS AXIOIMAGE A1 with differential interference contrast. Species identification followed European diatom floras. At least 400 valves were counted in each sample. |
O pessoal envolvido no projeto:
Métodos de Amostragem
Diatoms were sampled with help of a toothbrush to remove the biofilm and placed into a tray with a little water. The resulting suspension was collected in a plastic bottle, fixed with Lugol iodine and stored prior to analysis.

Controle de Qualidade | Samples for diatom analysis were following the National and European recommendations. |
Descrição dos passos do método:
- Diatom slides were mounted with Naphrax, and at least 400 valves per sample. were counted and identified to species or variety level under oil-immersion phase contrast light microscopy using a ZEISS AXIOIMAGE A1 microscope. General diatom floras were consulted for diatom identification.
