Descripción

The dataset contains records of large mammals (Mammalia) collected in the lower valley of the River Tua and included in the Complementary Studies (2010) of the Environmental Impact Assessment of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected between February and March 2010 with 40 cameras in sampling points with favourable habitats in 20 2x2 km UTM squares on the area of the lower Tua river valley directly or indirectly affected by the Foz-Tua dam. The presence of individuals and the species identification was recorded by direct observation of the photos taken with the cameras.

Datos del proyecto

The dataset contains records of large mammals (Mammalia) collected in plots along the lower Tua River, and included in the Complementary Studies of the Environmental Impact Assessment of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected between February and March 2010, with 40 cameras (two cameras/2x2 km UTM squares) in sampling plots with favourable habitats for large mammals within a 5-km buffer around the River Tua lower valley. The occurrence of the target taxa was documented through 216 observation events in 40 sampling points. In total, four taxa were identified to species rank. The most abundant species (> 90 records) were Martes foina (113) and Genetta genetta (96).

Título EDP Foz-Tua: Large Mammals (camera-trapping): Complementary Studies [2010]
Identificador EDP Biodiversity Data
Fuentes de Financiación The work was funded by EDP - Energias de Portugal, S.A.
Descripción del área de estudio The study was conducted in part of the sub-basins of river Tua, prior to the construction and subsequent flooding of the lower part of this river’s valley by the Foz-Tua Hydroelectric Dam. The sampling was centered in suitable habitats for large mammals in each 2x2 km UTM squares found in a 5 km radius buffer around the future reservoir banks and up to 35 km from the Tua mouth.
Descripción del diseño The objective of the study was to characterize the large mammals fauna in a buffer of 5 km around the Tua lower valley before the dam construction, and to gather quality data to support the design and implementation of mitigation and/or compensation measures. The camera trapping was used to complement the classic transect methods.

Métodos de muestreo

Sampling was designed to cover the main habitat types for large mammals in and around the lower Tua valley affected by the Foz-Tua dam (including the reservoir area). Two digital cameras with motion sensor and infrared iluminator were set in each 2x2 km UTM square over a period of three days and three nights. Baits (a mixture of meat and sardine oil) were set 2-4 m from the cameras to attract potential mammals. The machines were programmed to shoot a video of 15 seconds and shoot two pictures with a delay of 1 minute after the activation. All cameras were inspected after each 3-day period of exposition. Species identification and assessment of age and sex (when possible) were made by visual observation of the pictures taken.

Área de Estudio The data were collected within a 5-km buffer around the Tua lower valley (Northeast Portugal), up to 35 km from the mouth, in the municipalities of Carrazeda de Ansiães, Alijó, Murça, Vila Flor and Mirandela.
Control de Calidad All identifications were performed by qualified technicians
