The dataset contains occasional records of cliff-nesting bird species of high conservation priority, namely birds of prey (Aves, Accipitriformes and Falconiformes), collected in the lower valley of River Sabor (NE Portugal), in the scope of the long-term Ecological Monitoring Program (PME) of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams (AHBS), promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. This dataset includes results of surveys made in and around the area affected by the dam, from February 2010 to September 2014. Data include both occasional observations and observations in the fixed points used to monitor the target species, but performed outside the regular census program. Observations came from all the study area around the Sabor river, from its mouth up to 42 km upstream. The presence and identity of the birds seen were assessed by visual observation with binoculars and/or telescope. The records include taxa identified at the species level.
The data in this sampling event resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 792 records.
1 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

|Study Area Description||The study was conducted in part of the sub-basin of river Sabor affected by the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dam. The target species were recorded within a 5-km buffer around the lower Sabor river and its main tributaries, from the river mouth and up to 42 km upstream. Observations were made in the main habitat types occurring in the region.|
|Design Description||Design Description The objective of the study was to monitor changes in the distribution patterns and abundances of priority conservation species of birds, particularly birds of prey, Black Stork (Ciconia nigra) and Black Wheatear (Oenanthe leucura) in the area of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dam, from the initial and intermediate phase of the construction to the the reservoir filling periods (2010-2014). This dataset complements the monitoring program of priority cliff-nesting bird species in fixed observation points.|
The personnel involved in the project:
The dataset includes non-systematic observations of cliff-nesting bird species of high conservation priority made with binoculars and telescope, throughout the study area. The identification was made "in loco" by experienced observers, with the support of appropriate field guides.
|Study Extent||The data were collected within a 5-km buffer around the margins of the lower Sabor river and its main tributaries, from the river mouth up to 42 km upstream, in the municipalities of Torre de Moncorvo, Alfândega da Fé, Mogadouro e Macedo de Cavaleiros.|
|Quality Control||All individual identifications were performed by qualified technicians|
Method step description:
- To be completed
|Purpose||This dataset is part of a broader initiative whereby the company EDP - Energias de Portugal S.A. will made available biodiversity data collected during impact assessment and biological monitoring studies.|
|Maintenance Description||This resource will be regularly checked for accuracy.|
