Description
The dataset contains records of land birds (Aves) collected in the lower valley of River Sabor (NE Portugal), in the scope of the long-term Ecological Monitoring Program (PME) of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams (AHBS), promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. This dataset includes results of surveys made in and around the area affected by construction works complementary to the dam sites, from August 2010 to September 2014. The presence and identity of bird species were assessed by visual and/or acoustic observation, with the support of binoculars. The records include taxa identified at the species or genus levels.
Data Records
The data in this sampling event resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 153 records.
1 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.
Versions
The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Project Data
The dataset contains records of land birds (Aves) collected in the lower valley of River Sabor (NE Portugal) and its main tributaries, in the scope of the long-term Ecological Monitoring Program (PME) of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams (AHBS), promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. This dataset includes results of surveys made in locations where weirs were planned to be built in the future under the mitigation program of AHBS, from August 2010 to September 2014. A total of 9 points were surveyed in the selected sites. The occurrence of the target taxa was documented through 153 observation events, which produced a total of 5511 individual observations. The most abundant species (>400 records) were Sturnus unicolor (624), Fringilla coelebs (551), Turdus merula (476) and Passer domesticus (412).

Identifier | EDP Biodiversity Data |
Funding | The work was funded by EDP - Energias de Portugal, S.A. |
Study Area Description | The study was conducted in part of the sub-basin of river Sabor affected by the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dam. The sampling was centered in suitable habitats for land birds at several locations affected by complementary works, linked to but outside the dam construction area (e.g., re-establishment of road communications or the construction of an Interpretation and Animal Recovery Center). All of these works were located close to the two dams. |
Design Description | The objective of the study was to monitor changes in the distribution patterns and abundances of bird species in the area of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams, during the construction and flooding periods (2010-2014). This dataset refers to sampling sites associated with additional/complementary work to the dam structures. |

Sampling Methods
Sampling was designed to cover the most relevant habitats for land birds in a buffer of 5 km around the sites were additional/complementary work to the main dam structure was performed. A total of 9 point counts were surveyed (1-5 per site). At each count point, a 10-minute session was performed, in which all birds detected by sight or sound were recorded. The identification was made "in situ" by experienced observers, with the support of appropriate field guides.
Study Extent | Data were collected in an area around the two dams, in Vilariça stream (5 km from the Sabor river mouth) and in a stretch of 3 km, west of Felgar (16 km from the Sabor mouth), in the municipality of Torre de Moncorvo. |
