Description

The dataset contains records of land birds (Aves) collected in the lower valley of River Sabor (NE Portugal), in the scope of the long-term Ecological Monitoring Program (PME) of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams (AHBS), promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. This dataset includes results of surveys made in and around the area affected by the dams, from February 2010 to September 2014. Sampling was performed in selected points distributed along the lower Sabor river valley. The presence and identity of bird species were assessed by visual and/or acoustic observation, with the support of binoculars. The records include taxa identified at the species or genus levels.

Data Records

The data in this sampling event resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 2,717 records.

1 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.

Project Data

The dataset contains records of land birds (Aves) collected in the lower valley of River Sabor (NE Portugal) and its main tributaries, in the scope of the long-term Ecological Monitoring Program (PME) of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams (AHBS), promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. This dataset includes results of surveys made in and around the area affected by the dams, from February 2010 to September 2014.. Sampling was performed in a total of 143 sampling points along the river Sabor sub-basin, with 118 sampling points in the area affected by the dam and 25 control points in a nearby area within the Sabor watershed. The occurrence of the target taxa was documented through 2718 observation events, which produced 113942 positive identifications. In total, the most abundant (ie, detected) species (>5000 records) were Fringilla coelebs (almost 15000 observations), followed by Turdus merula (9340), Delichon urbicum (8658), Parus major (7248) and Carduelis cannabina (5707).

Title EDP Baixo Sabor: Land Birds - Construction and Reservoir Filling Phases (Sabor river valley) [2010-2014]
Identifier EDP Biodiversity Data
Funding The work was funded by EDP - Energias de Portugal, S.A.
Study Area Description The study was conducted in part of the sub-basin of river Sabor affected by the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dam. The sampling was centered in suitable habitats for land birds in 42 5x5 km squares centered in the Sabor river and its tributaries affected bt the dam, from the river mouth up to 42 km upstream.
Design Description The objective of the study was to monitor changes in the distribution patterns and abundances of bird species in the area of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams, during the construction and flooding periods (2010-2014). This dataset refers to the area directly or indirectly affected by the dams, in the river Sabor and/or its main tributaries.

Sampling Methods

Sampling was designed to cover the most relevant habitats for land birds in a buffer of 5 km around the lower reach of the Sabor river and its main tributaries. A total of 143 point counts were distributed in a grid of 42 5x5 km squares. The sampling was centered in suitable habitats for land birds along the valley and its main tributaries. At each point, a 10-minute sampling session was performed, in which all birds detected by sight or sound were recorded. The identification was made "in situ" by experienced observers, with the support of appropriate field guides.

Study Extent The data were collected within a 5-km buffer around the lower Sabor river and its main tributaries in the area affecvted by the dam, from the river mouth up to 42 km upstream, in the municipalities of Torre de Moncorvo, Alfândega da Fé, Mogadouro e Macedo de Cavaleiros.
Quality Control All individual identifications were performed by qualified technicians
