Description
The dataset contains the results of Iberian Wolf (Canis lupus) (Mammalia) surveys made in the lower valley of River Sabor (NE Portugal), some of its small tributaries, and in the rivers Maçãs and Angueira, in the scope of the long-term Ecological Monitoring Program (PME) of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams (AHBS), promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Surveys were made in the area affected by the dam, and in control areas farther from the dam, from June 2010 to August 2014. Sampling was performed 1-3 times a year, between May and November, with a total of 19-28 howling stations sampled each year. No detection of Iberian wolf was obtained during these surveys, thus the dataset reports on locations where the species was deemed absent, thereby providing a baseline to assess future changes in species occurrence patterns.
Data Records
The data in this sampling event resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 161 records.
1 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.
Versions
The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Title | EDP Baixo Sabor: Construction and Reservoir Filling Phases - Iberian Wolf [howling surveys] - [2010-2014] |

Identifier | EDP Biodiversity Data |
Funding | The work was funded by EDP - Energias de Portugal, S.A. |
Study Area Description | The study was conducted in part of the sub-basin of river Sabor affected by the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams. The sampling was made in suitable reproduction habitats for Iberian Wolf, in a grid of 5x5 km squares established in the lower Sabor river valley and some of its small tributaries, ands in the rivers Maçãs and Angueira, from the river mouth up to 42 km upstream. |
Design Description | The objective of the study was to detect the presence of the target species and to monitor changes in its distribution patterns in the area of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams during the construction and the reservoir filling periods (2010-2014). These surveys aimed to complement the traditional method of scat search, to provide direct evidence of species occurrence. After 2011, they ceased to be used throughout the study area, and they were limited to particular locations where the probability of obtaining positive contacts with the wolf was judged to be higher. |

Sampling Methods
Acoustic sampling was designed to cover the whole study area, with particular emphasis on places of confirmed or potential occurrence of Iberian Wolf. A total of 28 (2010-11), 14 (2012) or 19 (2013-14) acoustic (howling) stations were distributed throughout the 38 5x5 km squares. Surveys took place between May and November of each year. At each station, simulated howling sequences interrupted by pauses of a few minutes were performed. This method is most effective in detecting offspring, which are more likely to respond to simulated howling and so this method is just applied during the breeding season and dependence of the offspring (May to October).
Study Extent | The data were collected in a grid of 38 5x5 km squares established in the lower Sabor river valley, its tributaries, and in the rivers Maçãs and Angueira, from the river mouth up to 42 km upstream, in the municipalities of Torre de Moncorvo, Alfândega da Fé, Mogadouro and Macedo de Cavaleiros. |
