Description
The dataset contains records of amphibians (Amphibia) collected in the lower valley of the River Tua and included in the Complementary Studies (2009-2010) of the Environmental Impact Assessment of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected between October 2009 and March 2010 during field visits to 440 sampling points with favourable habitats in 20 2x2 km UTM squares on the area of the lower Tua valley directly or indirectly affected by the Foz-Tua dam. The presence of individuals was recorded by direct observation.
Data Records
The data in this sampling event resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 128 records.
1 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.
Versions
The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Project Data
The dataset contains records of amphibians (Amphibia) collected in plots along the lower Tua River and in Ferradosa stream (Douro sub-basin), and included in the Complementary Studies of the Environmental Impact Assessment of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected between October 2010 and March 2010, during field visits to 440 sampling plots with favorable habitats for amphibians (tanks, ponds, rivers, streams) within a 5-km buffer around the River Tua lower valley. The occurrence of the target taxa was documented through 405 observation events in 119 sampling points. In total, eight taxa were identified, of which seven to the species rank and one to the genus rank. The most abundant species were Salamandra salamandra (105 observation events), Lissotriton boscai (77), Triturus marmoratus (75) and Pelophilax perzi (64).

Study Area Description | The study was conducted in part of the sub-basins of river Tua, prior to the construction and subsequent flooding of the lower part of this river’s valley by the Foz-Tua Hydroelectric Dam, and in Ferradosa stream (Douro sub-basin), which was used as a control site. The sampling was centered in suitable habitats for amphibians (e.g., tanks, ponds, streams, rivers) found in a 5 km radius buffer around the future reservoir banks and up to 50 km from the Tua mouth. |
Design Description | The objective of the study was to characterize the Herpetofauna in a buffer of 5 km around the Tua lower valley before the dam construction, and to gather quality data to support the design and implementation of mitigation and/or compensation measures. The Ferradosa stream was used as an control site external do the Tua valley. |

Sampling Methods
Sampling was designed to cover the main habitat types for amphibians (tanks, ponds, streams, rivers) in and around the lower Tua valley affected by the Foz-Tua dam (including the reservoir area), in a gradient of distance (reservoir, < 5 km, > 5 km). Each sampling plot was visited once or twice in autumn (October-November) of 2010 and spring (February-March) of 2010. All habitats were searched for individuals (adults or larvae) of amphibians and all individuals detected were recorded. Species identification and assessment of age and sex (when possible) were made “in loco”, with the help of appropriate field guides
Study Extent | The data were collected within a 5-km buffer around the Tua lower valley (Northeast Portugal), up to 50 km from the mouth, and in Ferradosa stream (Douro sub-basin) in the municipalities of Carrazeda de Ansiães, Vila Flor, Alijó, Murça and Mirandela. |
