Descripción
The dataset contains records of terrestrial birds (Aves) collected in the lower valley of the River Tua and included in the Complementary Studies (2009-2010) of the Environmental Impact Assessment of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected between December 2009 and April 2010 during field visits to 24 line transects with favourable habitats in 20 2x2 km UTM squares on the area of the lower Tua valley directly or indirectly affected by the Foz-Tua dam. The presence of individuals was recorded by direct (sight) and/or indirect (ear) observation.
Registros

The dataset contains records of terrestrial birds (Aves) collected in transects along the lower Tua River, and included in the Complementary Studies of the Environmental Impact Assessment of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected between December 2009 and April 2010, during field visits to 24 transects with favourable habitats for terrestrial birds within a 5-km buffer around the River Tua lower valley. The occurrence of the target taxa was documented through 2361 positive observation events. In total, 69 species were identified. The most abundant species were Fringilla coelebs (285 observation events), Turdus merula (249), Sylvia atricapilla (212), Erithacus rubecula (209), Parus major (170), Ptyonoprogne rupestris (134) and Serinus serinus (120).

Descripción del área de estudio | The study was conducted in part of the sub-basins of river Tua, prior to the construction and subsequent flooding of the lower part of this river’s valley by the Foz-Tua Hydroelectric Dam. The sampling was centered in suitable habitats for terrestrial birds found in a 5 km radius buffer around the future reservoir banks and up to 50 km from the Tua mouth. |
Descripción del diseño | The study was a complement (using a different methodology) to the previous characterization of the terrestrial avifauna in a buffer of 5 km around the Tua lower valley before the dam construction, and to gather quality data to support the design and implementation of mitigation and/or compensation measures. |

Métodos de muestreo
Sampling was designed to cover the main habitat types for terrestrial birds in and around the lower Tua valley affected by the Foz-Tua dam. Twenty-four transects of variable extension (range: 450-1187 m) were set in 20 2x2 km squares (1-2 transects per square), and visited once in winter (December-January) and spring (March-April) of 2009-10. Each transect was surveyed on foot, at a constant speed, by two observers for at least 30 minutes. All contacts (by sight or ear) with the tarrget species were recorded. Species identification and assessment of age and sex (when possible) were made “in loco”, with the help of appropriate field guides
