Description

The dataset contains records of nocturnal birds (Aves: Strigidae), and particularly the Eagle Owl (Bubo bubo) collected in the lower valley of the River Tua and included in the Ecological Monitoring Program (2011-2017) of the Environmental Impact Assessment of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected between January 2011 and June 2017 during field visits to 22 sampling points on the area of the lower Tua valley directly affected by the Foz-Tua dam. The presence of individuals was recorded by acoustic observation.

Project Data

The dataset contains records of nocturnal birds (Aves: Strigidae), particularly the Eagle Owl (Bubo bubo) collected along the lower Tua River valley, and included in the Complementary Studies of the Environmental Impact Assessment of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected between January 2011 and June 2017, during field visits carried out in 22 sampling points for nocturnal bird playbacks (acoustic census) within a 5-km buffer around the lower Tua River valley. The occurrence of the target taxa was documented through 66 positive observation events. In total, 6 species were identified. The most abundant species was Strix aluco (33 observation events). The target species Bubo bubo was detected in nine occasions.

Title EDP Foz Tua Nocturnal Birds - Ecological Monitoring Program [2011-2017]
Identifier EDP Biodiversity Data
Funding The work was funded by EDP - Energias de Portugal, S.A.
Study Area Description The study was conducted in part of the sub-basin of river Tua, prior to the construction and subsequent flooding of the lower part of this river valley by the Foz-Tua Hydroelectric Dam. The sampling was centered in suitable habitats for nocturnal birds found in a 5 km radius buffer around the future reservoir banks and up to 50 km from the Tua mouth.
Design Description The objective of the study was to monitor the occurrence and distribution of the nocturnal bird community in general, and in particular of the Eagle Owl (Bubo bubo), in a buffer of 5 km around the lower Tua River valley before and during the dam construction (2011-2016), and during the flooding (2016-2017), in order to evaluate the potential impacts of the dam construction in this group of birds.

Sampling Methods

Sampling was designed to cover the main habitat types for nocturnal birds in and around the lower Tua River valley affected by the Foz-Tua dam. Each sampling point was visited once (2011) or three times (2011-2017) per year in winter (January/February) and spring (April/June), for acoustic censuses. The methodology consisted in spontaneous listening (withouth any playback) for 10 minutes, during which all "natural" contacts with nocturnal birds were recorded, followed by the emission of vocal recordings for one minute to induce audible responses of individuals of Bubo bubo, or other species. The playbacks were followed by a fixed listening time (2 min), where all contacts with any nocturnal species were recorded. This procedure was repeated three times in each sampling point. All censuses begun 15 minutes after sunset and proceed up to two hours (maximum) after the first listening.

Study Extent The data were collected within a 5-km buffer around the Tua lower valley (Northeast Portugal), up to 50 km from the mouth, in the municipalities of Carrazeda de Ansiães, Alijó, Vila Flor, Murça and Mirandela.
Quality Control All identifications were performed by qualified technicians
