Description

The wolf subspecies present in Iberian Peninsula, Canis lupus signatus (Cabrera 1907), has in Portugal the status of Endangered (Red Book of the Vertebrates of Portugal), being covered by specific national legislation (Law no. 90/88, of 13th of December August and Decree-Law No. 54/2016, of 25 August), which grants it the Status of Protected Species. This study intents to update the existing knowledge about the situation of the wolf and gather information to support the management of the species and the environment in which it is located in Portugal. the National Census of Wolf 2002/2003 developed by a partnership established between ICN and Grupo Lobo, whose objectives were: - update the distribution map of this species in Portugal; - estimate the number and distribution of existing family groups; - analyze the evolution of the population in relation to the results obtained in the work carried out under the LIFE Program between 1994 and 1996. After compiling the existing information about the species presence, field prospecting work was carried out, which consisted, above all, in conducting routes in search of evidence of the presence of the species, as well as listening and waiting stations. The presence of the species was detected in about 20,000 km2, of which in only about 16,000 km2 the species is estimated to occur regularly (distribution area). The sampling unit used was the decachylomeric square of the Universal Transverse Mercator reticulum (UTM 10x10 km), since the lobe presents movements and vital areas of this order of magnitude, and for this reason this mesh is referred to in several works as the most appropriate to study this species.

Data Records

The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 315 records.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Project Data

The subspecies present in the Iberian Peninsula, Canis lupus signatus (Cabrera, 1907), has in Portugal the "Endagered" status (Red Book of Vertebrates of Portugal), being covered by specific national legislation (Lei n.º 90/88, de 13 de agosto e Decreto-Lei n.º 54/2016, de 25 de agosto), which gives it the Status of Protected Species. This work is an update of the Iberian wolf status in Portugal and resulted from a partnership work between ICNF and Grupo Lobo and had the following objectives: Update the wolf distribution map in Portugal; Estimate the number and distribution of existing family groups (packs); Investigating the family group breeding status; Analyze the population evolution regarding the previous works.

Title População de Lobo ibérico: resultados do Censo Nacional de 2002/2003
Identifier Iberian_Wolf_Presence_type
Funding This work was co-fund by ICNF, I.P. and the European Union, through the Environment Operational Programme (application 1.1/00021– Documentos Estruturantes da Conservação da Natureza e da Biodiversidade). The preparation of this resource for publication through GBIF was supported by Project PORBIOTA—Portuguese E-Infrastructure for Information and Research on Biodiversity (POCI-01-0145-FEDER-022127), under the Operational Thematic Program for Competitiveness and Internationalization (POCI), under the PORTUGAL 2020 Partnership Agreement, through the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER) and FCT.
Study Area Description The study area was defined based on Project LIFE (ICN, 1997). Is a 29000 Km² area containg parts of Braga, Viana do Castelo, Porto, Vila Real, Bragança, Aveiro, Viseu, Guarda, Castelo Branco e Portalegre municipalities. The area is manly mountainous or plateau, dominated by rural landscape, where agricultural areas alternate with forest and uncultivated patches and where cattle raising in extensive regimen is a predominant aspect.

Sampling Methods

The sampling unit used in this work was the UTM 10x10. The presence of wolves was detected through four different ways: Paths on foot or by car in search of signs of the species' presence (droppings, tracks, scratches); Sound stations - Wolf howl simulation looking for return howl from the packs Waiting stations - Detection by direct observation Gathering information from local populations

Study Extent The data was collected in a 29000 Km² area, containg parts of Braga, Viana do Castelo, Porto, Vila Real, Bragança, Aveiro, Viseu, Guarda, Castelo Branco e Portalegre municipalities, from May to October of 2002 and 2003, having been punctually carried out, in both years, transects in search of evidence of the presence of the species outside this period
Quality Control All initial data was inserted in a specific relational database built specifically for the project, which implemented several quality control methods. In the preparation of the dataset for GBIF publication, data consistency was verified using cluster algorithms using OpenRefine.

Method step description:

  1. For each UTM 10x10 the presence was Confirmed, Probable or Non Detected.
  2. The following steps were performed in data layer: - Convertion of the .shp from EPSG:3763 (ETRS89) to EPGS:4326 (WGS84) - Extraction of the wkt geometry from the layer - Centroids calculation the for each polygon - Calculation of the coordinate accuracy through the longest distance from the centroid to the borders of the polygon. - Calculation the centroids coordinate - Cross-reference of the centroids with CAOP2020 layer - export to csv and reinterpret attributes matching to DwC standard terms. In the DwC archive: occurrenceRemarks - information about wolf presence. occurrenceStatus - information about wolf pack presence. dynamicProperties - information about wolves found dead georeferenceRemarks- The grid number (gid) verbatimCoordinates - UTM coordinates
