Описание

The Atlas of breeding birds of Portugal makes an inventory of all 235 breeding species, from which 221 are native species, and 205 presenting a regular breeding activity. The Atlas covers a period from 1999 to 2005. The project "Atlas of breeding Birds of Portugal" aimed to know the current distribution of breeding species in Continental Portugal and in the autonomous regions of Madeira and the Azores. It pretended also to characterize the abundance, when possible, of national populations of these species, during the period of 1999 to 2005. This dataset comprised two layers of information: Directed Census - Distribution data of birds target-species by directed census, except for Aquila adalberti, Aegypius monachus and Pterocles alchata whose location is confidential (includes marginal 10x10 km UTM grids); Other species - distribution data for the remaining species (excluding UTM 10x10 km marginal grids). The project involved the participation of ca. 500 volunteers, more than a dozen professional collaborators and various working teams. The project results from a fundamental partnership with three other entities, namely the SPEA – Sociedade Portuguesa para o Estudo das Aves (Portuguese Society for the Study of Birds, a non-governmental association that works for the conservation of birds and their habitats in Portugal and which brings together numerous members interested in this faunal group); the Parque Natural da Madeira (PNM, Madeira Natural Park), and the Direção Regional do Ambiente dos Açores (DRA, Regional Environment Directorate of the Azores), entities responsible for the conservation of wild birds in the autonomous regions. The Atlas contains occurrence data for breeding birds belonging to 20 orders, 58 families, 115 genus, and 180 species.

Методы сбора

This atlas collected information on the distribution of the breeding species in Continental Portugal and in the autonomous regions of Madeira and the Azores during 1999-2005. Whenever possible, they also characterize the abundance of national populations of these species. Moreover, information was classified according to breeding activities observed as: possible breeding, confirmed breeding, no data.

Охват исследования The geographic area considered for the original study was Continental Portugal.
Контроль качества All initial data was inserted in a specific relational database built specifically for the project, which implemented several quality control methods. In the preparation of the dataset for GBIF publication, data consistency was verified using cluster algorithms using OpenRefine.

Описание этапа методики:

  1. Aggregation of original data from several sources (see above) into a purpose specific relational database built for the project. For details, see Equipa Atlas (2008). Preparation of the dataset for GBIF publication used as source the geographic layer in shape file format obtained in: https://sig.icnf.pt/portal/home/item.html?id=067cb81bdc8148839f44ad6115b1824e The data layer was a grid layer containing 10x10 km UTM polygons. The following steps were performed: - conversion of the spatial layer to geographic coordinates using WGS84 as reference system; - determination of centroids from the 10x10 km grid polygons; - used the centroids to determine the locations based on the Carta Administrativa Oficial de Portugal 2020 (CAOP2020) and OpenStreetMaps; - extraction of decimal latitude and longitude of the centroids; - calculation of the coordinates precision based on the distance of the centroid, to the farthest point of the polygon that originated it; - determination of WKT for the polygons, for which centroids were considered; - exportation to csv file and reinterpretation of attributes matching to DwC standard terms. dynamicProperties are including: (1) breedingCode (cod_contat in original dataset) from 0 to 18 (indicated in occurrenceRemarks) (2) atlasSpeciesCode (cod_especi in original dataset) as follows
