Study Area Description Located in the eastern central Atlantic, 570 km west of Ngor Island (Senegal, West African coast) the Cabo Verde archipelago is composed of ten islands and eight islets formed by rock accumulation arising from volcanic eruptions from a hotspot under submarine platforms. The total land area of 4,033 km2 with ~965 km of coastline is believed to have formed between ~3 to 15.8 Ma. The insular marine platform (< 200m) surrounding the islands covers approximately 1,900 km2, representing only 0.2 % of the total Cabo Verde Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). The total EEZ area of Cabo Verde accounts for 796 thousand km2 excluding the insular shelf area (isobaths depth < 200 m).
