Descrição

This dataset is based on monthly colonial waterfowl counts in Portugal, between 20 February – 31 July of 2013 and 2014. A total of 148 wetlands sites were included in the censuses and all species of colonial waterfowl species were counted regularly. The counts were done by direct approach, except in large colonies where estimate counts were done. In non-accessible areas, the counts were based on aerial photographs, complemented by in-out movements of adult birds in those colonies. The results of each species counts are presented per river basins in a report, Encarnação V. (2014) Monitorização das espécies de aves aquáticas coloniais, with the distribution of Ardeidae (7 species), Threskiornithidae (2 species), and Phalacrocoracidae (1 species).

Dados Sobre o Projeto

This dataset is based on monthly waterfowl counts in Portugal, from 20 February to 31 July, during 2013 and 2014. A total of 148 wetlands, distributed in 9 river basins, were included in the monitoring survey and all considered species were counted regularly. The results of each species counts are presented in a report, Encarnação V. (2014) Monitorização das espécies de aves aquáticas coloniais, with the distribution of Ardeidae (7 species), Threskiornithidae (2 species), and Phalacrocoracidae (1 species).

Título Monitorização das espécies de aves aquáticas coloniais em Portugal – 2013-2014
Financiamento This work was co-fund by ICNF, I.P. and the European Union, through the Environment Operational Programme (application 1.1/00021– Documentos Estruturantes da Conservação da Natureza e da Biodiversidade). The preparation of this resource for publication through GBIF was supported by Project PORBIOTA—Portuguese E-Infrastructure for Information and Research on Biodiversity (POCI-01-0145-FEDER-022127), under the Operational Thematic Program for Competitiveness and Internationalization (POCI), under the PORTUGAL 2020 Partnership Agreement, through the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER) and FCT.
Descrição da Área de Estudo The report covers several wetlands where different colonial waterfowl species are breeding in Continental Portugal.
Descrição do Design The abundance quantification method was carried out in the form of directed censuses, according to the characteristics of each species, except in large colonies where estimate counts were done. In non-accessible areas, the counts were based on aerial photographs, complemented by in-out movements of adult birds in those colonies. Few extra species are included only in the report because punctually observed and already monitored in the area (e.g., as Larus audouinii in the report, actually as Ichthyaetus audouinii). Several species are not included since they have their own surveys (e.g., Ciconia ciconia) or are in difficult habitats (e.g., Phalacrocorax aristotelis in coastal cliffs). The only Ardeidae in continental Portugal considered as non-colonial species, Ixobrycus minutus, is not included in the present monitoring survey. Sampling sites with no observations are also listed.

Métodos de Amostragem

A total of 148 wetlands were considered during the survey, distributed in 9 river basins. The abundance quantification method was carried out in the form of directed censuses, according to the characteristics of each species, except in large colonies where estimate counts were done. In non-accessible areas, the counts were based on aerial photographs, complemented by in-out movements of adult birds in those colonies.

Área de Estudo This report is covering a monitoring survey of colonial waterfowl species in 148 wetlands of Continental Portugal from 20 February to 31 July during 2013 and 2014.
Controle de Qualidade All initial data was inserted in a specific relational database built specifically for the project, which implemented several quality control methods. In the preparation of the dataset for the GBIF publication, data consistency was verified through cluster algorithms using OpenRefine.

Descrição dos passos do método:

  1. (1) Aggregation of original data from several sources (see above) into a purpose specific relational database built for the project. (2) Preparation of the dataset for GBIF publication used as source the geographic layer in shapefile format. The data layer was a vector layer containing points. The following steps were performed: - Used the WGS84 points to extract the locations from the CAOP2020; - Exported to csv and reinterpreted attributes matching to DwC standard terms.
