Description
The dataset contains records of cliff-nesting species of high conservation priority, namely birds of prey (Aves, Accipitriformes and Falconiformes) and Black Stork (Ciconia ciconia) (Aves, Ciconiiformes) collected in the lower River Sabor (NE Portugal), in the scope of the long-term Ecological Monitoring Program (PME) of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams (AHBS), promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. The dataset includes results of surveys made in and around the area affected by the dam, from February 2010 to September 2014. Data consists of observations of the target species performed in fixed sampling points directed to birds of prey. Observations were made around the Sabor river, from its mouth to 42 km upstream. The presence and identity of bird species were assessed by visual and/or acoustic observation with binoculars and/or telescope. The records include taxa identified at the species level.
Data Records
The data in this sampling event resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 434 records.
1 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.
Versions
The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Study Area Description | The study was conducted in part of the sub-basin of river Sabor affected by the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams. The sampling was centered in suitable habitats for cliff-nesting birds of prey in 42 5x5 km squares centered in the Sabor river, from its mouth up to 42 km upstream. |
Design Description | The objective of the study was to monitor changes in the distribution patterns and abundances of cliff-nesting bird species of high conservation priority, particularly birds of prey and Black Stork (Ciconia nigra) in the area of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams, from the initial and intermediate phases of the construction to the reservoir filling period (2010-2014). |

Sampling Methods
The dataset includes systematic observations using binoculars and telescope made from vantage fixed points scattered throughout the study area in favourable habitats to detect the target species and other cliff-nesting bird species. A single observation session took place per site in each season (spring, summer, autumn and winter) from 2010 to 2014. A total of 16 sampling points was established in dominant features near areas with suitable habitats for cliff-nesting birds of prey. At each point, one observer spent 1 hour recording all contacts with the target species. All sessions were performed at the hottest hours of the day to maximize the probability of contacts with the target species, and they occurred only in favorable weather conditions of wind and rainfall. All identifications were made "in loco" by experienced observers, with the support of adequate field guides.
Study Extent | The data were collected within a 5-km buffer around the margins of the lower valley of river Sabor and its main tributaries, up to 42 km from the mouth, in the municipalities of Torre de Moncorvo, Alfândega da Fé, Mogadouro e Macedo de Cavaleiros. |

Quality Control | All individual identifications were performed by qualified technicians |
