Descrição
The dataset contains records of vascular plants collected in the lower valley of River Sabor (NE Portugal) in the scope of the long-term Ecological Monitoring Program (PME) of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams (AHBS), promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A, to assess the level of damage in the autoctonous flora (species, communities and habitats) of conservation relevance in the work front (dam structures and complementary works – dam yards, quarries, heaps, work front and road accesses) during the dams construction period (2010-14). Plant inventories were taken in line transects performed on foot, in all work front sites, along 42 km upstream, in the Sabor valley, and in the Vilariça stream. A total of 2905 events produced 194 confirmed presences. The most common species were Festuca duriotagana with 21330 individuals/m2, Ruscus aculeatus (2399) and Buxus sempervirens (2260).

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Dados Sobre o Projeto
The dataset contains records of vascular plants collected in the lower valley of River Sabor (NE Portugal) in the scope of the long-term Ecological Monitoring Program (PME) of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams (AHBS), promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A, to assess the level of damage in the autochthonous flora (species, communities and habitats) of conservation relevance in the work front (dam structures and complementary works – dam yards, quarries, heaps and road accesses) during the dams construction period (2010-14). Plant inventories were taken in line transects performed on foot, in all work front sites, along 42 km upstream, in the Sabor valley, and in the Vilariça stream. The occurrence of the target species was documented through 2905 observations which provided 194 positive records of 16 species. The most common species in the patches surveyed were Festuca duriotagana with 21330 individuals/m2, Ruscus aculeatus (2399) and Buxus sempervirens (2260).

Descrição da Área de Estudo | The study was conducted in part of the sub-basin of river Sabor affected by the actual construction works of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dam (workfronts). The sampling was centered in selected species and habitats of conservation concern from the Feiticeiro Dam (downstrem the main work) to upstream, along 42 km of the river. |
Descrição do Design | The objective of the study was to follow the fate of selected patches of species and habitats of conservation concern in the work fronts (dam structures and complemantary works – dam yards, quarries, heaps, work front and road accesses) during the construction period of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams (2010-2014). Sampling was performed in a variable number of transects associated with specific work fronts. The fate of each patch in each year was documented, and the number and/or area of each floristic/habitat value recorded. A number of non-affected sites of similar characteristics were used as “controls” (the sites with a “C” preceding the notation). |

Métodos de Amostragem
The methodology used consisted in performing line transects along the work fronts, generally carried out on foot, to detect species listed in the annexes to the EU’s Habitats Directive, rare species (for example, boxwood), priority habitats and plant communities of interest to the conservation. The area surveyed was 30 m to each side of the transect axis. Each individual species (or habitat) of interest was mapped with a Garmim Colorado 300 GPS. When the spots were larger than 600 m2 or more than 30 m in length only the mid-point of the area/transect is given, along with the initial and final coordinates of the transect. In each nucleus, the number of individuals or the area occupied by the relevant species/habitats (as appropriate for each case) was counted, or estimated. In the case of construction works such as yards, heaps and quarry, among others, an S-shaped path was performed, trying to cover as much area as possible. A record was also kept on the level of damage caused to the patches by the work: "Completely destroyed patch”, “Partially damaged patch” and “Intact patch”. The partially damaged category means that part of the patch had been deforested or buried, eliminating part of the individuals or affecting part of the nucleus area. When the survey was carried out outside the flowering season of a given species, thus making it unidentifiable, a value of “0” was automatically attributed, although it could be a false negative. These cases were dully noted in the column “occurenceRemarks”. In general, each patch was visited once per season and year. However, terrain and logistical difficulties dictated that, sometimes, more than one trip per patch was necessary. Most species were identified “in loco” although, in some cases, samples were collected to further identification in the laboratory. The nomenclature is mostly in accordance with Flora Ibérica (Castroviejo et al., 1986-2009) for the volumes already published and for Nova Flora de Portugal (Franco, 1971, 1984; Franco & Rocha Afonso, 1994, 1998 and 2003) for the remaining groups.
