Описание

The dataset contains records of vascular plants collected in the lower valley of River Sabor (NE Portugal) in the scope of the long-term Ecological Monitoring Program (PME) of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams (AHBS), promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A, to assess the spreading capacity of exotic invasive species in the work front (dam structures and complementary works – dam yards, quarries, heaps, work front and road accesses) during the dams construction period (2010-14). Plant inventories were collected in line transects performed on foot, in all work front sites, along 42 km upstream, in the Sabor valley, and in the Vilariça stream.

The occurrence of the target species was documented through 2152 observations of occurrence of 21 species. The most common species were Phytolacca americana (1006 records), Datura stramonium (348) and Ailanthus altissima (308).

Название EDP Baixo Sabor: Construction Phase – Vascular Flora and Habitats in the Work Fronts: invasive and exotic species - [2010-2014]
Идентификатор EDP Biodiversity Data
Финансирование The work was funded by EDP - Energias de Portugal, S.A.
Описание района исследования The study was conducted in part of the sub-basin of river Sabor affected by the actual construction works of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dam (work fronts). The sampling was centered in selected invasive exotic species in the Feiticeiro Dam and the Baixo Sabor dam work fronts, as well as several access roads up to 42 km upstream.
Описание плана выполнения исследований The objective of the study was to follow the fate of selected nucleous of invasive exotic species in the work fronts (dam structures and complemantary works – dam yards, quarries, heaps, work front and road accesses) during the construction period of the Feiticeiro and Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams complex (2010-2014). Sampling was performed in a variable number of transects associated with specific work fronts. The fate of each patch in each year was documented, and the number and/or area of each exotic species recorded. A number of non-affected sites of similar characteristics were used as “controls” (the sites with a “C” preceding the name).

Методы сбора

The methodology used in the work fronts consisted of line transects, generally carried out on foot, to detect invasive exotic species. The area surveyed was 30 m to each side of the transect axis. Each individual species (or habitat) of interest was mapped with a Garmim Colorado 300 GPS. In each patch of invasive species detected, the number of individuals (or the area occupied by) the relevant species was counted (or estimated). In the case of construction works such as yards, heaps and quarry, among others, an S-shaped path was performed, trying to cover as much area as possible. A record was also kept on the level of damage caused to the patch by the work (“TD” = totally destroyed; “PD” = partially damaged, or “ND” = not damaged). The partially damaged (PD) category means that part of the patch had been deforested or buried, eliminating part of the individuals or affecting part of the nucleus area. In general, each patch was visited once per season and year. However, terrain and logistical difficulties dictated that, sometimes, more than one trip per patch was necessary. Most species were identified “in loco” although, in some cases, samples were collected to further identification in the laboratory. The nomenclature is mostly in accordance with Flora Ibérica (Castroviejo et al., 1986-2009) for the volumes already published and for Nova Flora de Portugal (Franco, 1971, 1984; Franco & Rocha Afonso, 1994, 1998 and 2003) for the remaining groups.
