Description

The dataset contains records of terrestrian birds (Aves) collected in the two breeding territories of Bonelli’s Eagle (Aquila fasciata) in the lower valley of the River Tua and included in the Compensatory Measure MC46b (“Management of Raptor’s Feeding Habitats”) (2018-2020) of the Compensatory Measures Program of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected in late winter (February-March) of 2018-2019, during field visits to 120 sampling points: 60 “intervention” points (identified with a “I”) located near the structures purposely built to promote the occurrence/fixation of the prey species (deforested areas, feeders and drinkers for birds, artificial shelters for rabbits) in the two territories, and 60 “control” points (identified with a “c”) located in the vicinity of the intervention areas. Each point is sampled every two years. All observations were made with binoculars and/or telescopes. Although the main objective of this monitoring was to assess the occurrence status of the main prey species of birds for Bonelli’s Eagle (Columba spp. And Alectoris rufa) after the implementation of the Compensatory Measure, all bird species seen of heard were also included. Due to the movement restrictions imposed by the covid-19 pandemics, no data were collected in 2020.

The occurrence of the target taxa (and other bird species) was documented through 120 observation events. In total, 1734 observations were identified to the species rank. The most abundant species (>100 records) were Serinus serinus (216 individuals), Fringilla coelebs (183), Turdus merula (123) and Columba palumbus (118).

Titre EDP Foz-Tua: Terrestrian Birds (count points) – Compensatory Measures Program, Compensatory Measure MC46B (Management of Raptors’ Feeding Habitats) [2018-19]
Identifiant EDP Biodiversity Data
Financement The work was funded by EDP - Energias de Portugal, S.A.
Description du domaine d'étude / de recherche The study was conducted in part of the sub-basin of river Tua affected by the Foz-Tua Hydroelectric Dam. The sampling was centered in (“intervention”), and nearby (“controls”) located in the two Bonelli’s Eagle breeding territories known in the lower Tua valley, up to 45 km from the Tua mouth.
Description du design The objective of the study was to assess the long-term effects of the implementation of strctures (feeders and drinkers) built to promote the fixation of prey species of birds for the Bonelli’s Eagle (Columba spp., Alectoris rufa), by comparing sampling plots with and without the aformentioned structures. All bird species seen or heard in each census plot were recorded. This dataset does not include the year 2020 due to the restricition movements caused by the covid-19 pandemics

Méthodes d'échantillonnage

Sampling was designed to compare the abundances of the target species (and, in general, of the whole local bird community) inside (“intervention” points) and outside (“control” points) the areas were actions of the Compensatory Measure MC46B took place, in the known breeding territories of the Bonelli’s Eagle in the lower Tua valley. A total of 120 sampling points distributed in pairs (one “intervention”, one “control”) were set (20 in deforested areas, 20 in feeders/drinkers, 20 in artificial shelters, and the respective controls), which are to be surveyed in the long term. All points were sampled in the winter, in the early morning or late afternoon, every two years. Each sampling event had a duration of 10 minutes, in which all birds seen or heard in three bands of 50m around the point (<50 m, 50-100m, >100m) were recorded. Species identification and assessment of age and sex (when possible) were made “in loco”, with the help of appropriate field guides.

Etendue de l'étude The data were collected within a 5-km buffer around the two territories of the Bonelli’s Eagle (Aquila fasciata) in lower valley of the River Tua (Northeast Portugal), up to 45 km from the mouth, in the municipalities of Alijó, Carrazeda de Ansiães, Murça and Mirandela.
Contrôle qualité All observations were made by qualified technicians
