Description
The dataset contains records of terrestrial birds (Aves) and European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) collected in the two breeding territories of Bonelli’s Eagle (Aquila fasciata) in the lower valley of the River Tua and included in the Compensatory Measure MC46B (“Management of Raptor’s Feeding Habitats”) (2018-2020) of the Compensatory Measures Program of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected in late spring (June-July) and autumn (September-October) of 2018-2020 during field visits to 64 sampling transects: 30 “intervention” points (identified with a “I”) located near the structures purposely built to promote the occurrence/fixation of the prey species (deforested areas, feeders and drinkers for birds, artificial shelters for rabbits) in the two territories, and 34 “control” points (identified with a “c”) located in the vicinity of the intervention areas. All bird observations were made with binoculars and/or telescopes, whereas the presence of the European Rabbit was assessed both directly (observations) and indirectly (latrines, scratches). The geographic coordinates presented (DecimalLongitude, DecimalLatitude columns) are those of the initial point of each transect.

All bird observations were made with binoculars and/or telescopes, whereas the presence of the European Rabbit was assessed both directly (observations) and indirectly (latrines, feaces, tracks). The occurrence of the target taxa (Columba spp., Alectoris rufa and Oryctolagus cuniculus)) was documented through 384 observation events. In total, 334 observations were identified to the species rank. The most abundant species were Oryctolagus cuniculus, with 275 records (22 of live individuals, and 253 of presence – latrines), followed by Columba palumbus (42 records), Alectoris rufa (16) and Columba livia (1).

Description du domaine d'étude / de recherche | The study was conducted in part of the sub-basin of river Tua affected by the Foz-Tua Hydroelectric Dam. The sampling was centered in (“intervention”), and nearby (“controls”) located in the two Bonelli’s Eagle breeding territories known in the lower Tua valley, up to 38 km from the Tua mouth. |
Description du design | The objective of the study was to assess the long-term effects of the implementation of strctures (deforested areas, feeders and drinkers, artificial shelters) built to promote the fixation of selected prey species for the Bonelli’s Eagle (Columba spp., Alectoris rufa and Oryctolagus cuniculus), by comparing their occurrences/abyndance in sampling plots with and without the aformentioned structures. |

Méthodes d'échantillonnage
Sampling was designed to compare the abundances of the target species inside (“intervention” points) and outside (“control” points) the areas were actions of the Compensatory Measure MC46B took place, in the known breeding territories of the Bonelli’s Eagle in the lower Tua valley. A total of 64 sampling transects (30 in intervened areas - 10 in deforested areas, 10 in feeders/drinkers, 10 in artificial shelters – and 34 in non-affected areas (“controls”) were set, which are to be surveyed in the long term. All transects were sampled at least once in late spring and autumn, in the early morning or late afternnon. Each transect had a length of 250 m, in which all birds from the target species and all evidences from O. cuniculus were recorded. In the case of birds, species identification and assessment of age and sex (when possible) were made “in loco”, with the help of appropriate field guides.
