Description
The dataset contains occasional records of terrestrial birds (Aves) collected in the lower valley of the River Tua, and included in the Complementary Studies (2009-2010) of the Environmental Impact Assessment of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected between April and May 2010 during field visits to 16 sampling points with favourable habitats in 20 2x2 km UTM squares on the area of the lower Tua river valley directly or indirectly affected by the Foz Tua dam. The occurrence of birds was recorded whenever individuals were seen or heard in the vicinity of the observer.
Data Records
The data in this sampling event resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 65 records.
1 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.
Versions
The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Project Data
The dataset contains occasional records of terrestrial birds (Aves) collected along the lower Tua River valley, and included in the Complementary Studies of the Environmental Impact Assessment of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected between December 2009 and April 2010, within the framework of independent studies performed in the area covered by the Foz-Tua Hydroelectric project (ie, within a 5-km buffer around the River Tua lower valley). The occurrence of the target taxa was documented through 165 positive observation in 65 events. In total, 65 species were identified. The most recorded species (>10 individuals) were Merops apiaster (22), Turdus merula and Serinus serinus (21), Turdus philomelos (19), Sylvia atricapilla and Fringilla coelebs (14), Erithacus rubecula and Columba palumbus (13), and Sturnus unicolor and Circaetus gallicus (12).

Identifier | EDP Biodiversity Data |
Funding | The work was funded by EDP - Energias de Portugal, S.A. |
Study Area Description | The study was conducted in part of the sub-basins of river Tua, prior to the construction and subsequent flooding of the lower part of this river valley by the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam. The sampling was centered in suitable habitats for terrestrial birds found in a 5-km radius buffer around the future reservoir banks, and up to 50 km from the Tua mouth. |
Design Description | The objective of the study was to characterize the terrestrial avifauna in a buffer of 5 km around the lower Tua River valley before the dam construction, and to gather quality data to support the design and implementation of mitigation and/or compensation measures. |

Sampling Methods
Occasional records, compiled from projects carried out in the same geographical area of the Foz Tua Dam. Species identification and assessment of age and sex (when possible) were carried out by field technicians with experience in ornithology. The identification and species assessment methods were those used for the bird regular census by point-counts.
Study Extent | The data were collected within a 5-km buffer around the lower Tua River valley (Northeast Portugal), up to 50 km from the mouth in the municipalities of Carrazeda de Ansiães, Vila Flor, Alijó, Murça and Mirandela. |
