Description

The dataset contains records of terrestrial birds (Aves) collected in the lower valley of the River Tua and included in the Ecological Monitoring Program (2011) of the Environmental Impact Assessment of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected in the winter of 2011-2017 during field visits to 28 (2011), 27 (2012) or 60 (>2013) sampling points with favorable habitats in 26 2x2 km squares within a 5-km radius buffer around the Tua valley, directly or indirectly affected by the Foz-Tua dam. All observations were made with binoculars and/or telescopes.

Project Data

The dataset contains records of terrestrial birds (Aves) collected in plots along the lower Tua River valley and included in the Ecological Monitoring Program of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected in January and February of 2011-2017, during field visits to 28 (2011), 27 (2012) or 60 (>2013) sampling plots with favorable habitats for terrestrial birds in 26 2x2 km squares within a 5-km buffer around the lower Tua River valley. The occurrence of the target taxa was documented through 349 observation events. In total, 5899 observations were identified to the species rank. The most abundant species were Fringilla coelebs (939 occurrences), Erithacus rubecula (574), Sylvia atricapilla (467), Parus major (334). Turdus philomelos (333) and Sylvia melanocephala (312).

Title EDP Foz Tua: Terrestrial Birds, Winter (point counts) - Ecological Monitoring Program [2011-2017]
Identifier EDP Biodiversity Data
Funding The work was funded by EDP - Energias de Portugal, S.A.
Study Area Description The study was conducted in part of the sub-basin of river Tua affected by the Foz-Tua Hydroelectric Dam. The sampling was centered in suitable habitats for terrestrial birds in 26 2x2 km squares in a 5 km radius buffer around the future reservoir banks and up to 45 km from the Tua mouth.
Design Description The objective of the study was to monitor changes in the distribution patterns and abundances of species of birds in the area of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, prior to (2011) and during (2011-2016) the dam construction, and in the subsequent flooding of the river valley (2016-2017).

Sampling Methods

Sampling was designed to cover the main habitats for terrestrial birds along the lower Tua valley affected by the Foz-Tua dam, including the future reservoir area. In the first two years (2011 and 2012), a total of 28 point counts distributed along the valley was used, some of which were duplicated as they included more than one habitat type. A final grid of 60 sampling points was established in 2013 and used afterwards. All plots were sampled once or, in some cases, twice per winter. in the early morning or late afternoon. Each sampling event had 5 minutes, of duration in which all birds seen or heard in two bands of 50m around the point were recorded. Species identification and assessment of age and sex (when possible) were made “in loco”, with the help of appropriate field guides.

Study Extent The data were collected within a 5-km buffer around the Tua lower valley (Northeast Portugal), up to 45 km from the mouth, in the municipalities of Alijó, Carrazeda de Ansiães, Murça, Mirandela and Vila Flor.
Quality Control All identifications were performed by qualified technicians.
