Descrição
The dataset contains records of Butterflies (Lepidoptera) collected in the lower valley of the River Tua, and included in the Ecological Monitoring Program (2011-2017) of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected between July 2014 and August 2017 during field visits to 33 sampling transects with favorable habitats on the area of the lower Tua valley directly or indirectly affected by the Foz Tua dam, and in a small stream of the Douro basin. The occurrence of the target species was recorded when individuals were seen or captured in the selected transects.

Dados Sobre o Projeto
The dataset contains records of diurnal Butterflies (Lepidoptera) along the lower Tua and Douro river valleys, and included in the Ecological Monitoring Program of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected between July 2014 and August 2017, during field visits to 33 sampling transects with favourable habitats for Lepidoptera within a 5-km buffer around the River Tua lower valley and in Ferradosa stream (Douro sub-basin). The occurrence of the target taxa was documented through 802 positive observation events, of which 40 where identified to the taxonomic level of order, 31 to family, 94 to genus and 637 to species. The most recorded species (≥40 individuals) were Plactynemis latipes (67 observations), Orthetrum coerulescens (54), Calopteryx haemorrhoidalis (45), Onychogomphus forcipatus (43) and Anax imperator (40).

Descrição da Área de Estudo | The study was conducted in the part of the sub-basin of river Tua affected by the Foz-Tua Hydroelectric Dam and in a small stream (Ferradosa) in the Douro basin. The sampling was centered in suitable habitats for diurnal butterflies in 33 sampling transects in a 5 km radius buffer around the future reservoir banks and up to 45 km from the Tua mouth. |
Descrição do Design | The objective of the study was to monitor changes in the distribution patterns and abundances of species of diurnal butterflies in the area of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam during (2014-2016) the dam construction, and in the subsequent flooding of the river valley (2016-2017). The Ferradosa stream was used as a control site outside the Tua sub-basin. |

Métodos de Amostragem
Sampling was designed to cover the main habitat types for diurnal butterflies in and around the lower River Tua valley affected by the Foz Tua dam and in the Ferradosa stream (Douro basin). Each sampling point was visited twice per year in spring (April-June) and summer (July-August). Each sampling transect, of about 500 m in lenght, was walked on foot at a constant speed and avoiding stops at hotspots (ie., places with a large influx of Lepidopterans) in order to avoid sampling biases. Adults were monitored during their flight period, between 9:30 and 16:30, on days with appropriate weather conditions (temperature above 13ºC, light wind, little cloudiness, no rain or fog), with a hand-held net. All individuals observed or captured in 5 m buffer in front or to the sides of the observer (never to the backwards) were recorded, to avoid duplication of counts. Identification was performed by visual observation, using appropriated field guides. Although this method is optimized to monitor flying adults, whenever caterpillars or pupae were observed they were also recorded and photographed for later identification.
Área de Estudo | The data were collected within a 5-km buffer around the lower Tua River valley and in Ferradosa stream, in the Douro sub-basin (Northeast Portugal), up to 45 km from the mouth in the municipalities of Carrazeda de Ansiães, Vila Flor, Alijó, Murça and Mirandela. |
