Description
The dataset contains records of otter (Lutra lutra, Mammalia) collected in plots along lower river Tua sub-basin and included in theEcological monitoring Program of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected in November 2010 and March 2011, during field visits to 12 sampling plots with favourable habitats for otter located in the lower river Tua and some tributaries. The occurrence of the target taxa was documented through 22 observations of scats identified as belonging to the target species.
Data Records
The data in this sampling event resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 24 records.
1 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.
Versions
The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Funding | The work was funded by EDP - Energias de Portugal, S.A. |
Study Area Description | The study was conducted in part of the sub-basin of river Tua affected by the Foz-Tua Hydroelectric Dam. The sampling was centered in suitable habitats for the otter in a 5 km radius buffer around the future reservoir banks and up to 35 km from the Tua mouth. |
Design Description | The objective of the study was to monitor changes in the distribution patterns and abundances of the otter in the area of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, prior to the dam construction (autumn 2010 and winter 2011). It also corresponds to the pilot study that laid the basis for the Otter Monitoring Program (2011-2017). |

Sampling Methods
Sampling was designed to cover the course of the lower river Tua and its main tributaries, from the mouth up to the northern limit of the Foz-Tua dam. Twelve sampling plots were setup in this area. In each sampling point, a transect up to 600 m was performed along the margins, looking for signs of presence (mostly scats) in suitable places (prominent stones and vegetation in the margins of the water line). The transect was interrupted when the presence of the otter was detected, but never before 200 m. Each plot was visited once in November 2010 and once in March 2011, in dry or light rain periods, to minimize the chance of lexiviation of the feacal material. The scats were identified "in loco" by expert researchers. Only presence/absence information was retained.
Study Extent | The data were collected in the river Tua sub-basin in the municipalities of Carrazeda de Ansiães, Alijó, Murça and Mirandela. |
