EDP Foz-Tua: Large Mammals (diurnal transects): Ecological Monitoring Program [2011-2017]

Última versión Publicado por EDP - Energias de Portugal en Oct 16, 2020 EDP - Energias de Portugal

The dataset contains records of large mammals (Mammalia) collected in the lower valley of the River Tua and included in the Ecological Monitoring Program (2011-2017) of the Environmental Impact Assessment of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected between June 2011 and August 2017 in up to 47 transects established in favorable habitats on the area of the lower Tua river valley directly or indirectly affected by the Foz-Tua dam. The presence of individuals and the species identification were obtained through indirect signs (scats, latrines, footprints).

Datos del Proyecto

The dataset contains records of large mammals (Mammalia) collected in transects along the lower Tua River, and included in the Ecological Monitoring Program of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected between June 2011 and August 2017, with 47 (2011), 24 (2012-2014) and 28 (>2014) line transects in areas with favorable habitats for large mammals within a 5-km buffer around the River Tua lower valley. The occurrence of the target taxa was documented through 1460 positive records. In total, 177 were identified only to class, 7 to order, 27 to family and 50 to genus, while 1229 were identified to the species rank. The most abundant species (> 100 records) were Vulpes vulpes (565), Sus scrofa (214) and Genetta genneta (164).

Título EDP Foz Tua Large Mammals (diurnal transects) - Ecological Monitoring Program [2011-2017]
Identificador EDP Biodiversity Data
Fuentes de Financiación The work was funded by EDP - Energias de Portugal, S.A.
Descripción del Área de Estudio The study was conducted in the lower valley of river Tua, during the construction of the Foz-Tua Hydroelectric Dam and the subsequent flooding of its reservoir. The sampling was centered in suitable habitats for large mammals in a 5 km radius buffer around the future reservoir banks and up to 35 km from the Tua mouth.
Descripción del Diseño The objective of the study was to monitor changes in the distribution patterns and abundances of species of large mammals in the area of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, prior to (2011) and during (2011-2016) the dam construction, and in the subsequent flooding of the river valley (2016-2017).

Métodos de Muestreo

Sampling was designed to cover the main habitat types for large mammals in and around the lower Tua valley affected by the Foz-Tua dam (including the reservoir area). Up to 47 transects were established in 24 2x2 km squares in the flooded area and in control areas upstream. Each transect, with a length of of about 500 m, was walked on foot, during daytime, by two observers, one each side of the transect, which recorded all individuals and/or signs of presence of the target species (e.g. scats, footprints, tracks, trails, rooting, hog wallows, rubs). All recorded contacts/signs have been identified or collected for later identification.

Área de Estudio The data were collected within a 5-km buffer around the Tua lower valley (Northeast Portugal), up to 35 km from the mouth, in the municipalities of Carrazeda de Ansiães, Alijó, Murça, Vila Flor and Mirandela.
Control de Calidad All identifications were performed by qualified technicians
