EDP Foz Tua Large Mammals (nocturnal transects) - Ecological Monitoring Program [2011]

Dernière version Publié par EDP - Energias de Portugal le Feb 18, 2020 EDP - Energias de Portugal

The dataset contains records of large mammals (Mammalia) collected in the lower valley of the River Tua and included in the Ecological Monitoring Program (2011-2017) of the Environmental Impact Assessment of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected between June and August 2011 in 24 transects established in favorable habitats on the area of the lower Tua river valley directly or indirectly affected by the Foz-Tua dam. The presence of individuals and the species identification were obtained through direct observations, with torch lights.

Données sur le projet

The dataset contains records of large mammals (Mammalia) collected in nocturnal transects along the lower Tua River, and included in the Ecological Monitoring Program of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected between June and August 2011, in 24 line transects in areas with favorable habitats for large mammals within a 5-km buffer around the River Tua lower valley. The occurrence of the target taxa was documented through 16 observation events, of which 12 correspond to positive species identifications (10 of Vulpes vulpes, and 2 of Oryctolagus cuniculus).

Titre EDP Foz Tua Large Mammals (nocturnal transects) - Ecological Monitoring Program [2011]
Identifiant EDP Biodiversity Data
Financement The work was funded by EDP - Energias de Portugal, S.A.
Description du domaine d'étude / de recherche The study was conducted in the lower valley of river Tua, during the construction of the Foz-Tua Hydroelectric Dam and the subsequent flooding of its reservoir. The sampling was centered in suitable habitats for large mammals in a 5 km radius buffer around the future reservoir banks and up to 35 km from the Tua mouth.
Description du design The objective of the study was to monitor changes in the distribution patterns and abundances of species of large mammals in the area of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, prior to (2011) and during (2011-2016) the dam construction, and in the subsequent flooding of the river valley (2016-2017). The use of this methodology was discontinued after 2011.

Méthodes d'échantillonnage

Sampling was designed to cover the main habitat types for large mammals in and around the lower Tua valley affected by the Foz-Tua dam (including the reservoir area). Twenty-four nocturnal transects of an average length of 2000 m (range: 505-3968 m), depending on accessibility by car, were established in 36 2x2 km squares in the flooded area and in a control area upstream. The transects were performed in a 4x4 wheeled vehicle at reduced speed (about 10km / h), using the headlights of the vehicle for frontal observations and a high power focus for lateral observations. Each team was formed by two observers, one driver, accountable for the frontal observations, and one person responsible for the portable spotlight to the sides of the transects. Species identification was made "in loco", if necessary, with the help of appropriate field guides.

Etendue de l'étude The data were collected within a grid of 36 2x2 km mesh in a 5-km buffer around the Tua lower valley (Northeast Portugal), up to 35 km from the mouth, in the municipalities of Carrazeda de Ansiães, Alijó, Murça, Vila Flor and Mirandela.
Contrôle qualité All identifications were performed by qualified technicians
