Descripción
The dataset contains records of large and medium-sized mammals (Mammalia: Carnivora, Cetartiodactyla and Lagomorpha) collected in the lower valley of the River Tua, and included in the Complementary Studies (2009-10) of the Environmental Impact Assessment of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected between February and March 2010 during field visitis to 40 transects (20 diurnal and 20 nocturnal) with favourable habitats in 20 2x2 km UTM squares on the area of the lower Tua valley directly or indirectly affected by the Foz Tua dam. The presence of individuals was recorded mainly through the detection presence signs such as scats, tracks, rooting/rummages and occaisonally, live individuals (only in the nocturnal transects).
Registros

The dataset contains records of large and medium-sized mammals (Mammalia: Carnivora, Cetartiodactyla and Lagomorpha) collected in transects along the lower Tua River, and included in the Complementary Studies of the Environmental Impact Assessment of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected between February and March 2010, during field visits to 40 transects (20 diurnal and 20 nocturnal) with favourable habitats for the target species within a 5-km buffer around the lower Tua River valley. The occurrence of the target taxa was documented through 119 observation events in 24 sampling transects (20 diurnal and four nocturnal). In total, eight taxa were identified to species rank. The most abundant species (>10 signs of presence) were Vulpes vulpes (60), Sus scrofa (21) and Mustela nivalis (11).

Descripción del área de estudio | The study was conducted in part of the sub-basins of river Tua, prior to the construction and subsequent flooding of the lower part of this river valley by the Foz-Tua Hydroelectric Dam. The sampling was centered in suitable habitats for the target species found in a 5-km radius buffer around the future reservoir banks, and up to 50 km from the Tua mouth. |
Descripción del diseño | The objective of the study was to characterize the fauna of large and medium-sized mammals in a buffer of 5 km around the Tua lower valley before the dam construction, and to gather quality data to support the design and implementation of mitigation and/or compensation measures. This methodology was used as a complement to the point counts used in the same dates and for the same group of species. |

Métodos de muestreo
Sampling was designed to cover the main habitat types for the target mammal species in and around the lower Tua River valley affected by the Foz-Tua dam (including the reservoir area). Each transect was visited once in the winter (February-March) of 2010. All habitats were searched for identifiable signs of presence (scats, tracks, rooting/rummages) of the target species, or live individuals (in nocturnal transects). Species identifications were made in situ, with the help of appropriate field guides.
