Description
The dataset contains records of nocturnal birds (Aves: Strigidae), and particularly the Eagle Owl (Bubo bubo) collected in the lower valley of the River Tua and included in the Complementary Studies (2009-2010) of the Environmental Impact Assessment of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected between March and April 2010 during field visits to 39 sampling points in 20 2x2 km UTM squares on the area of the lower Tua valley directly or indirectly affected by the Foz-Tua dam. The presence of individuals was recorded by acoustic observation.

The dataset contains records of nocturnal birds (Aves: Strigidae), particularly the Eagle Owl (Bubo bubo) collected along the lower Tua River valley, and included in the Complementary Studies of the Environmental Impact Assessment of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected between March and April 2010, during field visits carried out in 39 sampling points for nocturnal bird playbacks (acoustic census) within a 5-km buffer around the lower Tua River valley. The occurrence of the target taxa was documented through 27 positive observation events. In total, 5 species were identified. The most abundant species was Strix aluco (19 observation events). The target species Bubo bubo was detected in just one point.

Description du domaine d'étude / de recherche | The study was conducted in part of the sub-basins of river Tua, prior to the construction and subsequent flooding of the lower part of this river valley by the Foz-Tua Hydroelectric Dam. The sampling was centered in suitable habitats for terrestrial birds found in a 5 km radius buffer around the future reservoir banks and up to 50 km from the Tua mouth. |
Description du design | The objective of the study was to characterize the occurrence and distribution of the nocturnal bird community in general, and in particular of the Eagle Owl (Bubo bubo), in a buffer of 5 km around the lower Tua River valley before the dam construction, and to gather quality data to support the design and implementation of mitigation and/or compensation measures. |

Méthodes d'échantillonnage
Sampling was designed to cover the main habitat types for nocturnal birds in and around the lower Tua River valley affected by the Foz-Tua dam. Each sampling point was visited once in winter/spring (March-April of 2010), for a 10 minutes acoustic census. The methodology consisted in the emission of vocal recordings for one minute to induce audible responses of individuals of Bubo bubo, or other species. The playbacks were preceded by a fixed listening time (2 min), where all contacts with any nocturnal species were recorded. All censuses were carried out in the period of 30 minutes before sunset and one hour after sunset.
Etendue de l'étude | The data were collected within a 5-km buffer around the Tua lower valley (Northeast Portugal), up to 50 km from the mouth, in the municipalities of Carrazeda de Ansiães, Alijó, Murça and Mirandela. |
