Description
The dataset contains records of Dragonflies and Damselflies (Odonata) collected in the lower valley of the River Tua, and included in the Ecological Monitoring Program (2011-2017) of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected between June 2011 and August 2017 during field visits to 33 sampling points with favorable habitats on the area of the lower Tua valley directly or indirectly affected by the Foz Tua dam, and in a small stream of the Douro basin. The occurrence for the both groups was recorded when individuals were seen or captured heard around the point in a 15-minute census.

Données sur le projet
The dataset contains records of Dragonflies and Damselflies (Odonata) along the lower Tua River valley, and included in the Ecological Monitoring Program of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected between June 2011 and August 2017, during field visits to 33 sampling points with favourable habitats for Odonata within a 5-km buffer around the River Tua lower valley and a small stream in the Douro basin. The occurrence of the target taxa was documented through 802 positive observation events, of which 40 where identified to the taxonomic level of order, 31 to family, 94 to genus and 637 to species. The most recorded species (≥40 individuals) were Plactynemis latipes (67 observations), Orthetrum coerulescens (54), Calopteryx haemorrhoidalis (45), Onychogomphus forcipatus (43) and Anax imperator (40).

Description du domaine d'étude / de recherche | The study was conducted in the part of the sub-basin of river Tua affected by the Foz-Tua Hydroelectric Dam and in a small stream (Ferradosa) in the Douro basin. The sampling was centered in suitable habitats for Dragonflies and Damselflies in 33 sampling points in a 5 km radius buffer around the future reservoir banks and up to 45 km from the Tua mouth. |
Description du design | The objective of the study was to monitor changes in the distribution patterns and abundances of species of Dragonflies and Damselflies in the area of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, prior to (2011) and during (2011-2016) the dam construction, and in the subsequent flooding of the river valley (2016-2017). The Ferradosa stream was used as a control site outside the Tua sub-basin. |

Méthodes d'échantillonnage
Sampling was designed to cover the main habitat types for Dragonflies and Damselflies in and around the lower River Tua valley affected by the Foz Tua dam and in the Ferradosa stream (Douro basin). Each sampling point was visited twice per year in spring (April-June) and summer (July-August). The sampling aimed to detect both adults and larvae/exuvia of the target species. Adults were monitored during their flight period, between 9:30 and 16:30, on days with appropriate weather conditions (temperature above 13ºC, light wind, little cloudiness, no rain or fog), with a hand-held net. Sampling took place for 15 minutes, during which the sighted individuals were recorded within a 5m range, and the sorrounding vegetation was carefully prospected. Reproductive behavior (individuals in tandem and ovoposition) and territorial behaviors were duly recorded. Specimens were identified in the field using appropriate guides Observations made in a non-systematic manner, particularly during the study area, were also recorded. All individuals were releasad after identification. Larval samples were collected using a hand-held net with a circular section of approximately 30 cm in diameter and 1 square-mm mesh. Also, 15-minute sweeps of the margins in each river/stream were performed in the opposite direction of the current, in order to sample different habitats (rock zones, vegetation). Two replicates were taken at each point, in places with the same characteristics, but not coincident. The samples were screened in the field and the relevant material fixed in situ with 80% alcohol for later identification in the laboratory. The collection of the exuvia was done by prospection of the vegetation around the water line for 15 minutes, in order to verify the presence of this type of structures. These were collected and stored in vials, duly labeled, for later identification in the laboratory, using specialized bibliography.
