Description
The dataset contains records of Phytobenthos (Diatoms) collected in the watershed of the River Tua and its tributaries, and included in the Ecological Monitoring Program (2011-2017) of the Environmental Impact Assessment of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected in the spring 2011-2015 during field visits to 17 sampling points distributed along the valley of river Tua (Northeast Portugal) and its tributaries, up to the intersection with rivers Rabaçal and Tuela, 52 kms upstream. The Ecological Monitoring Program (2011-2015) aims to evaluate the impacts of dam construction in the water quality of the river, before and during the construction process. The occurrence of the target taxa was documented through 33526 records of species presence and number of individuals (valves).
Data Records
The data in this sampling event resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 85 records.
1 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.
Versions
The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Project Data
The dataset contains records of the Phytobenthos collected in the lower valley of the River Tua and its main tributaries, within the Ecological Monitoring Program (2011-2015) of the Construction Phase of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected in spring/summer (April-July) of 2011-2015 during field visits to 18 sampling plots located along the lower Tua valley and its tributaries, up to 52 km upstream. The occurrence of the target taxa was documented through 33526 records of species presence and number of individuals (valves). The most abundant species (> 1000 individuals) were Achnanthidium rivulare (6001), Achnanthidium minutissimum (3962), Eolimna minima (2731), Achnanthidium subhudsonis (1863), Cocconeis pseudolineata (1659), Cocconeis euglypta (1083) and Planothidium frequentissimum (1052).

Study Area Description | The study was conducted in part of the sub-basin of river Tua affected by the Foz-Tua Hydroelectric Dam. The sampling was centered in the Tua river and associated tributaries until the intersection with rivers Tuela and Rabaçal, up to 52 km from the Tua mouth. |
Design Description | The objective of the study was to characterize dynamics of phytobenthos communities, to indicate changes in the ecological quality of river ecosystems in the lower Tua sub-basin, along all the stretch affected by the dam and in several control points upstream, during the dam construction (2011-2015). |

Sampling Methods
Epilitic communities were sampled in accordance with the Sampling Protocol and analysis for phytobenthos - diatoms (INAG 2008). In each sampling point a number of stones totaling a colonized surface of ≈100 cm2 was examined, avoiding, whenever possible, the shaded areas, as well as the areas without current or with very high water velocity. All samples were fixed “in loco” with commercial formaldehyde (37%) and brought to laboratory, where they were subjected to the nitric acid method (INAG, 2008). For each sample, about 400 valves were counted in random and not overlapping optical fields. Diatomaceous communities were identified up to the lowest possible taxonomic level using several floras, namely those of Germain (1981) and Krammer and Lange-Bertalot (1986, 1988, 1991a and 1991b), as well as the IBD manual (Prygiel and Coste, 2000).
Study Extent | The data were collected along the Tua lower valley (Northeast Portugal), up to 52 km from the mouth, in the municipalities of Alijó, Carrazeda de Ansiães, Murça, Vila Flor and Mirandela |

Quality Control | All taxa were identified by experienced researchers |
