Description
The dataset contains records of reptiles (Reptilia) collected in the lower valley of the River Tua, and included in the Complementary Studies (2010) of the Environmental Impact Assessment of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected between February and March 2010 during field visits to 440 sampling points with favourable habitats, in 20 2x2 km UTM squares in the area of the lower Tua valley directly or indirectly affected by the Foz Tua dam. The presence of individuals was recorded by direct observation.

The dataset contains records of reptiles (Reptilia) collected in plots along the lower Tua River valley, and included in the Complementary Studies of the Environmental Impact Assessment of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected between February and March 2010, during field visits carried out in 440 sampling plots with favourable habitats for reptiles, within a 5-km buffer around the River Tua lower valley. The occurrence of the target taxa was documented through 405 observation events in 79 sampling points. In total, five taxa were identified to the species level. The most abundant species (>15 individuals) were Podarcis hispanicus (52 individuals observed), Tarentola mauritanica (20) and Psammodromus algirus (17)

Description du domaine d'étude / de recherche | The study was conducted in part of the sub-basins of river Tua, prior to the construction and subsequent flooding of the lower part of this river valley by the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam. The sampling was centered in suitable habitats for reptiles found in a 5-km radius buffer around the future reservoir banks and up to 50 km from the Tua mouth. |
Description du design | The objective of the study was to characterize the Reptile fauna in a buffer of 5 km around the lower valley of the river Tua, before the dam construction, and to gather quality data in order to provide information needed to evaluate the impacts of dam construction on this community and, thus, to support the design and implementation of the respective mitigation and/or compensation measures. |

Méthodes d'échantillonnage
Sampling was designed to cover the main habitat types for reptiles in and around the lower Tua River valley affected by the Foz Tua dam construction (including the reservoir area). Each sampling plot was visited once in the winter (February-March) of 2010. All habitats were searched for reptilians (adults or juveniles), and all individuals detected were recorded. Species identification and assessment of age and sex (when possible) were made in situ, with the help of appropriate field guides.
Etendue de l'étude | The data were collected within a 5-km buffer around the Tua lower valley (Northeast Portugal) located in the region of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro, up to 50 km from the mouth, in the municipalities of Carrazeda de Ansiães, Murça and Mirandela. |
