Description

The dataset contains records of riparian birds (Aves) collected in the lower valley of the River Tua, and included in the Ecological Monitoring Program (2011) of the Environmental Impact Assessment of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected in the winter of 2010-2011 (February 2011), during field visits to 11 sampling points with favourable habitats (river beds and riparian galleries), in 20 2x2 km squares within a 5-km radius buffer around the Tua valley, directly or indirectly affected by the Foz Tua dam. All observations were made with binoculars or telescopes or when individuals were heard around the point.

Data Records

The data in this sampling event resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 11 records.

1 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.

Project Data

The dataset contains records of riparian birds (Aves) collected in plots along the lower Tua River valley, included in the Ecological Monitoring Program of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected in February 2011, during field visits to 11 sampling plots with favourable habitats for riparian birds (river beds and riparian galleries), in 20 2x2 km squares within a 5-km buffer around the lower Tua River valley. The occurrence of the target taxa was documented through 102 observation events. In total, 22 taxa were identified to the species rank. The most abundant species (>5 individuals) were Phalacrocorax carbo (26), Motacilla alba and Sylvia atricapilla (9), Erithacus rubecula , Serinus serinus and Parus major (8), Turdus merula (7) and Passer Domesticus (6).

Title EDP Foz-Tua: Riparian Birds (points) Ecological Monitoring Program [2011]
Identifier EDP Biodiversity Data
Funding The work was funded by EDP - Energias de Portugal, S.A.
Study Area Description The study was conducted in part of the sub-basin of river Tua, prior to the construction and subsequent flooding of the lower part of this river’s valley by the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam. The sampling was centered in suitable habitats for riparian birds (river beds and riparian galleries) found in 20 2x2 km squares, in a 5-km radius buffer around the future reservoir banks, and up to 45 km from the Tua mouth.
Design Description The objective of the study was to perform a pilot survey to test sampling methodologies and site locations for the subsequent monitoring of the habitat usage by riparian birds in the area of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, during the construction (2011-2015) and subsequent flooding of the river valley (2016-2017).

Sampling Methods

Sampling was designed to cover the riparian habitats along the lower Tua River valley (river beds and riparian galleries) affected by the Foz Tua dam, including the future reservoir area. Eleven plots were established along the river, one per 2x2 km square, covering the area to be flooded. All plots were sampled once in winter 2010/11. Each sampling event was surveyed during 10 minutes, during which all birds seen or heard around the point (unlimited distance method) were recorded. Species identification and assessment of age and sex (when possible) were made in situ, with the help of appropriate field guides.

Study Extent The data were collected within a 5-km buffer around the lower Tua River valley (Northeast Portugal), up to 45 km from the mouth, in the municipalities of Carrazeda de Ansiães and Vila Flor.
Quality Control All identifications were performed by qualified technicians
