Description
The dataset contains records of epiphytic lichens observed in Santa Cruz, Madeira Island, Portugal, in the scope of the monitoring program of the Urban Solid Waste Treatment Plant of Meia-Serra. The diversity of lichens was used in this study as an indicator of air quality in the areas surrounding the treatment plant. The dataset includes measurements of lichen species coverage in 10x20 cm quadrats, performed in six stations plus a remote location. The surveys were performed twice a year, between May 2002 and January 2007. Lichens were identified at the species level, whenever possible, and the phorophyte is also reported.
Data Records
The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 565 records.
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.
Versions
The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Sampling Methods
Measurements of lichen species coverage were measured in 10x20 cm quadrats placed in the bark of the main trunk of the phorophyte tree. Five trees were surveyed at each location. Only macrolichens were considered for this study.
Study Extent | The sampling area was defined to include the surroundings of the treatment plant of Meia Serra, in order to identify potential effects by air pollution. The sites were placed at all main directions from the plant, at distances ranging from 200 m up to 2 km, plus a remote location. |

Method step description:
- The lichen identification was done at the location, using lens whenever necessary. When the identification was not possible, a sample was taken for latter identification in the laboratory using binocular microscopes. Several identification keys were used in support of the identification, including floras and scientifc papers for Europe, North America and Macaronesia.
