This dataset presents the distribution of freshwater macroinvertebrates in Madeira Island streams.

Madeira is a typical oceanic island with unique biodiversity under increasing pressure. Madeira island is located 600 km off the Atlantic coast of North Africa, has an area of 742 km2 and a maximum altitude of 1861 m (Pico Ruivo). Madeira island comprises approximately 126 catchments and 200 streams ranging from 1st to 6th order.

Here, we present the data obtained from the samples collected in a field campaign during the spring of 2015 which aims for a better understanding of the diversity and distribution patterns of freshwater macroinvertebrates in Madeira Island.

Description du design Benthic macroinvertebrates were collected following the national sampling protocol (INAG, 2008). Samples were fixed in 96 % ethanol and transported to the laboratory.

Méthodes d'échantillonnage

Benthic macroinvertebrates were collected following the national sampling protocol (INAG, 2008). Samples were fixed in 96 % ethanol and transported to the laboratory. In the laboratory, samples were rinsed through a sieve of 500 μm mesh size, and macroinvertebrates were sorted and preserved in 70 % ethanol.

Etendue de l'étude Freshwater macroinvertebrates from 40 sites (MAD01 – MAD40) from 27 permanent streams in Madeira island.
Contrôle qualité Macroinvertebrates were identified and counted under a stereo microscope (Zeiss Stemi, Deutschland). Identification was made to the lowest possible taxonomic level using identification keys (e.g. Tachet, Bournand & Richoux, 2002; Oscoz, Galicia & Miranda, 2011).

  1. The data has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardised format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 751 occurrences with 69 records.
