Description

The "Bees of Portugal Collection, Science Museum of the University of Coimbra" dataset includes all the records of the specimens of Portuguese bees (Anthophila: Hymenoptera) on the zoological collection of the Science Museum of the University of Coimbra. It includes 13,374 specimens that were identified to species level between October 2023 and May 2024 (except 61 specimens, to genus level). This work was performed inside one of the PhD tasks of Hugo Gaspar (funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology – FCT - 2023.01736.BD) and for the improvement of reference collections for the project ARCADE (funded by the European Union through the project TETTRIs ARCADE 2/T1 - GA_101081903). The publication of this dataset is associated with the publication of the following paper: TO COMPLETE

Data Records

The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 13,374 records.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Study Area Description Portugal, Mainland and the Archipelagos of Azores and Madeira
Design Description Digitization, cataloguing, labelling, organization and taxonomic revision of historical Portuguese bee collectionof the Science Museum of the University of Coimbra - Bees of Portugal Collection, Science Museum of the University of Coimbra.

The personnel involved in the project:

Sampling Methods

The specimens were picked from the zoological collection. All the position inside original boxes were recorded. All labelled information was digitized. A new lable with basic information was added to all specimens. All specimens were revised with morphological analysis and organized in new entomological boxes.

Study Extent The specimens studied include only bees (Anthophila: Hymenoptera), all Portuguese species, spaning from 1877 to 1990, from all districts of Portugal (Mainland and Archipelagos of Azores and Madeira).
Quality Control All the taxonomic nomenclature follows the most updated European checklist (Ghisbain et al. 2023). Geographic coordinates were extracted with a centroid on localities or pin pointed by M.A. Diniz, with a variable levels of precision (ranging mostly from 10 to 2500 m).
