Description

The dataset contains records of bats (Chiroptera) collected in roosts along the lower valley of River Tua. Data was collected in the scope of the Ecological Monitoring Program (PME) and Program of Mitigation/Compensation Measures (PM C) of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A., subsequently (2021) transferred to Movhera – Hidroelétricas do Norte, S.A. Data were collected between January 2022 and October 2023 during field visits to 153 known or presumed bat hibernation, reproduction and pre-dispersion (post-reproduction) roosts, most of them between 0-15 km radius buffer around the lower valley of River Tua. The occurrence of the target taxa was documented through 510 observation events. In total, 17 taxa were identified, 15 to the species rank and two to the genus rank. The most common individual species (>100 records) were Rhinolophus ferrumequinum (954 records), Miniopterus schreibersii (510), and R. hipposideros (128). Due to the vulnerability of the roost locations, the precision of the geographic coordinates was degraded to 0.01

Couverture géographique

Most data were collected within a 5-km radius buffer around the river Tua valley (Northeast Portugal), up to 36 km from the mouth. There were also several sites located up to 15 km and two at >20 km from the river. The sites were located in the municipalities of Alijó, Carrazeda de Ansiães, Vila Flor, Mirandela, Sabrosa and Bragança.

Titre Movhera Foz Tua: Bat Roosts - Ecological Monitoring Program (PME) and Program of Mitigation/ Compensatory Measures (PMC): Exploration Phase (2022-2023)
Identifiant Movhera Biodiversity Data
Financement The work was funded by Movhera – Hidroelétricas do Norte, S.A.
Description du domaine d'étude / de recherche The study was conducted in part of the sub-basin of river Tua directly or indirectly affected by the construction of the Foz-Tua Hydroelectric Dam. The sampling included all known and potential roosts located in the flooded area and those found in a 15 km radius buffer around the future reservoir banks (caves, mines, tunnels, bridges, buildings, rock crevisses, etc.), and up to a length of about 36 km from the Tua mouth.
Description du design The objective of the study was to monitor the fate of bats roosts (hibernation and/or reproduction, and pre-dispersion periods) and associated bat populations in the area of the Foz-Tua Hydroelectric Dam, centered in a 15-km radius buffer around the river, during the second phase of exploration (2021-2023). Within the scope of the Compensatory Measures Program, the objectives also included the monitoring of bat population trends in (a) two deactivated railroad tunnels located >20 km from the Tua river (MC12G1), (b) 51 underground and cliffs roosts (PGM and MC12G2), (c)100 artificial roosts (bat boxes) in trees (MC12F1) and (d) two in bridges (MC12F2).

Méthodes d'échantillonnage

Sampling was designed to cover all known and potential bat roosts in the study area, including railroad tunnels, caves, mines, wells, bridges and all sorts of buildings. A place was considered to be a roost when the presence of bats was confirmed, either by direct observations or by indirect evidences (e.g., faeces, urine stains, etc.). Each roost was visited once or twice per season, in the hibernation (January-February), reproduction (April-August) and pre-dispersion (September-October) periods, depending on the year. In 2021, due to the Covid-19 pandemics movement restrictions, there was no monitoring campaigns. All roosts were searched for the presence of bats by two observers, which recorded all individuals seen. The time spent in each roost varied with the number of bats present and the accessibility conditions. The potential roosts in the rocky crevices were sampled with the conventional ultra-sound devices. The methodoogy used was the same applied for the habitat sampling program (PME and MC12H). Species identification were usually made “in loco”, with the aid of head-torches, binoculars and field guides. Some bats were photographed to allow a “a posteriori” identification of individuals that raised doubts, or to count large groups that could not be accurately counted in a suitable time in the field.

Etendue de l'étude The data were collected within a 15-km radius buffer around the lower valley of River Tua (Northeast Portugal), up to 36 km from the mouth, in the municipalities of Alijó, Carrazeda de Ansiães, Vila Flor, Mirandela, Sabrosa and Bragança. There were also two additional sites surveyed at >20 km from the river.
Contrôle qualité All individual identifications were performed by qualified technicians
