Description
The Reptilia collection of the Museu Nacional de História Natural e da Ciência, Universidade de Lisboa, Portugal, comprises 1209 accessions, corresponding to 2164 specimens. The majority of the specimens were collected 1980s, after the fire that destroyed the historical zoological collections of the former Museu Bocage in 1978. Several specimens’ additions from the 70’s were entered to the collection after the fire, mostly donated by the museum collaborators and other institutions. The greater number of specimens (largely Portuguese fauna) came from field works and studies by researchers and students from the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon, Portugal. Other material refers to donations from other European, South American and North American institutions. Recent field work in Africa has contributed with specimens from the former Portuguese colonies of Guinea-Bissau, São Tomé e Príncipe and Angola. The reptile collection of the Museu Nacional de História Natural e da Ciência, Universidade de Lisboa, Portugal, is the largest in the country, and one of the largest in the world, regarding Portuguese reptile fauna. Several nomenclatural types are housed in the collection, namely, those of: Blanus vandellii (Holotype); Blanus cinereus (Neotype); Trachylepis thomensis (Holotype and Paratypes); Trachylepis principensis (Holotype, Paratypes); Panaspis thomensis (Holotype and Paratypes);and Naja peroescobari (Holotype)

Méthodes d'échantillonnage
This dataset contains data from a Reptile Collection that includes specimens from many different origins and studies. There was not a common sampling method for all the specimens.
Etendue de l'étude | This dataset contains data from a Reptile Collection that includes specimens from many different origins and studies. Includes data from scientific/biodiversity studies as well as specimens from occasional collection. |
---|---|
Contrôle qualité | Specimens were checked individually and all the data available in the catalog and data sheets for each specimen was confirmed and digitized. Information from each specimen was catalogued in an Excel spreadsheet, involving two steps: i) digitization of specimen records; and ii) taxonomic revision and data checking. Nomenclature was checked through available literature, The Reptile Database [http://reptile-database.reptarium.cz/]. Georeferencing followed the recommendations by Chapman & Wieczorek (2006), including the determination of uncertainty of coordinates, in particular when insufficient information was available from specimens’ records and labels to attribute a specific locality (e.g. administrative regions, rivers, unprecise localities, etc.). |
Description des étapes de la méthode:
- The herpetological collections were catalogued using the software Microsoft Excel. We conducted extensive shelf surveys to locate all the remaining specimens of reptiles in the collection. After locating the specimens, basic curatorial procedures were taken. Each jar was cleaned if needed, and ethanol or formalin was changed to 70% ethanol. In certain cases jars were substituted as they were cracked or were otherwise not reliably sealable. All the information linked to the specimens and/or jars were collected, copied, and linked to the specimen. Taxonomical updates were made using the currently most updated available literature as references and followed the currently accepted nomenclature. The collecting locality for each specimen reference was georeferenced using “GEOLocate online application” (http://www.museum.tulane.edu/geolocate/). The uncertainty of georeferenced localities was recorded whenever possible. For some records it was not possible to determine the coordinates due to insufficient location information. All coordinates are given in geographic format, decimal degrees, datum WGS 84.
