Description

The data presented in this study were obtained from samples collected as part of the project "Macaronesian Islands as a testing ground to assess biodiversity drivers at multiple scales" (FCT - MACDIV) (2015-2018). This project aimed at gaining insights into the factors influencing community assembly in Macaronesian islands. To assess spider diversity, we employed the COBRA (Conservation Oriented Biodiversity Rapid Assessment) sampling protocol. Our sampling efforts were conducted in ten 50 m x 50 m dry shrub plots located on the Cabo Verde Islands of Santo Antão (comprising five plots) and São Vicente (comprising five plots). Additional ad-hoc samples are also available. With this publication, we contribute valuable information to the understanding of the arachnofauna of Cabo verde, specifically focusing on the islands of Santo Antão and São Vicente.

Our samples yielded a total of 3,368 specimens, among which 1300 (39%) were adults. The samples include 21 different families, 87 distinct species, 18 of which are morphospecies awaiting formal identification or description at species level. The families Oxyopidae (2 species) and Araneidae (8 species) dominated, comprising 49% of the specimens collected. Among the 68 identified species, 14 were exclusive to Cabo Verde, 40 were native but not exclusive, and 14 were introduced. The colonization status of Cithaeron reimoseri Platnick, 1991 remains uncertain. Endemic species represented 24% (n = 818) of the specimens, while native non-endemic species constituted 63% (n = 2122). A total of 29 species were newly documented in Cabo Verde, with 15 on Santo Antão, 7 on São Vicente, and 7 on both islands.

Données sur le projet

The data featured in this study originate from samples gathered during the project FCT - MACDIV (2015-2018). For our assessment of spider diversity, we employed the COBRA (Conservation Oriented Biodiversity Rapid Assessment) sampling protocol. Our sampling endeavors were carried out in ten 50 m x 50 m dry shrub plots situated on the Cabo Verde Islands, with five plots on Santo Antão and five on São Vicente. Furthermore, we have additional ad-hoc samples available. Through this publication, we provide significant insights into the arachnofauna of Cabo Verde, with a specific focus on the islands of Santo Antão and São Vicente.

Description du domaine d'étude / de recherche Cabo Verde is an island nation located in the central Atlantic Ocean. It consists of a group of volcanic islands and islets, ten main islands and several smaller islets and rocks. The islands are divided into two main groups: the Barlavento Islands (windward) in the north and the Sotavento Islands (leeward) in the south. The Cabo Verde Islands are situated off the northwest coast of Africa, approximately 570 kilometers (350 miles) west of Senegal. They are geographically closer to the African continent than to South America. The islands are of volcanic origin, and many of them still exhibit volcanic landscapes, including craters, lava flows, and rugged terrain. The geography of the Cabo Verde Islands is diverse. Some islands have lush, green landscapes with mountain ranges, while others are more arid and characterized by semi-desert conditions. Santo Antão, for example, is known for its dramatic mountainous terrain, while Boa Vista and Maio are flatter and have sand dunes. The islands experience a tropical climate with distinct wet and dry seasons. The northern islands receive more rainfall and tend to be greener, while the southern islands are generally drier.
Description du design Five plots of 50 x 50 m were set up in both islands (Santo Antão and São Vicent) in increasing distance in order to best test beta-diversity models. At each plot, an area of 0.25 ha (50 x 50 m) was delimited and all sampling occurred inside this area. All plots were located in areas where the habitat is arid and dominated by xerophytic community assemblages.

Méthodes d'échantillonnage

To assess spider diversity, we employed the COBRA (Conservation Oriented Biodiversity Rapid Assessment) sampling protocol. Due to the absence of arboreal plant species, foliage beating was not performed. The used methods were pitfall trapping, sweeping and active aerial search. Sweeping was performed during day and night, while active aerial search was only performed during the night periods, when spiders are generally more active. Additional ad-hoc sampling through active aerial search was performed in nearby locations to the sampling plots.

Etendue de l'étude Five plots of 50 x 50 m were set up in Santo Antão  and São Vicente.
Contrôle qualité In the laboratory, specimen sorting and spider identification followed standard procedures, using somatic and genitalic features for species identification.

Description des étapes de la méthode:

  1. A reference collection was made for all collected specimens (whether or not identified at species level) by assigning them a morphospecies code number and depositing them at the Dalberto Teixeira Pombo Insect Collection (DTP), University of Azores (Terceira Island).
