Geographic Coverage

The data were collected in selected sampling points in the river Tua sub-basin (Northeast Portugal), including the whole course of river Tua and its main tributaries, in the municipalities of Carrazeda de Ansiães, Vila Flor, Alijó, Murça, and Mirandela.

The dataset contains records of Pyrenean desman (Galemys pyrenaicus, Mammalia) collected in the River Tua sub-basin and included in the Ecological Monitoring Program (2021-2023) of the Environmental Impact Assessment of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. subsequently (2021) transferred to Movhera – Hidroelétricas do Norte, S.A. Data were collected between May and and October 2021 during field visits to 15 sampling transects in the riverbeds of the selected water lines with favorable habitats for the species. The presence of individuals was recorded by direct observation of signs (scats and/or footprints). No observations of the target species were made. After 2021, the monitoring program started to be executed every three years.

Sampling Methods

Sampling was designed to cover the course of the lower river Tua and its main tributaries from the mouth up to the northern limit of the Foz-Tua dam. Up to 15 sampling transects were setup in the Tua sub-basin Each transect up to 500 m was performed along the margins, looking for signs of presence (mostly scats) in suitable places (prominent stones and vegetation in the margins of the water line). The transect was interrupted whenever the presence of the Pyrenean desman was detected, and the time and distance recorded. Each plot was visited twice in spring (May-June) and autumn (October-November) in dry or light rain periods to minimize the chance of lexiviation of the feacal material. The scats potentially attributed to the species were stored and taken to the laboratory for molecular identification.
