Description
The present phytoplankton dataset was obtained during three surveys, CECIR, aboard the N.R.P. “Almeida Carvalho from “Instituto Hidrográfico”, as part of the project “Bases para o estudo da variabilidade do recrutamento da sardinha na costa portuguesa”. The campaigns took place from August 87 to December 89.
Data Records
The data in this sampling event resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 915 records.
2 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.
Versions
The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Sampling Methods
For the qualitative and quantitative analysis of phytoplankton from CECIR surveys, 250 ml samples of seawater were collected and placed in brown plastic bottles. The samples were in situ preserved with 20% formalin, neutralised with hexamethylenotetramine (previously placed in the bottle), resulting in a final concentration of 0.4%.
Study Extent | CECIR XIII and CECIR XVI - At each sampling station, depth levels of 0, 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 75 and 100 meters (or until five meters from the bottom) were sampled using "Nansen" bottles. CECIR XIV - At each sampling station, depth levels of 2, 10, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60 e 75 meters were sampled using "Nansen" bottles. |

Method step description:
- In the laboratory, subsamples of 100 ml were placed to sediment in counting chambers for 72 hours. Phytoplankton enumeration was performed using the Utermöhl technique, on a ZEISS IM35 inverted microscope equipped with bright field and phase contrast.
