Description

The present phytoplankton dataset was obtained during a seasonal sampling cycle conducted over five surveys named CICLOS I to IV and AREAS aboard the R/V Noruega from IPIMAR, as part of the project “Ciclos de produção planctónicos na costa portuguesa e sua relação com os recursos pesqueiros”. The campaigns took place from August 85 to April 87.

Data Records

The data in this sampling event resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 991 records.

2 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Geographic Coverage

Campaigns covered the coastal area of Portugal, from Caminha to V. R. Sto. António, having as geographical limits the meridians from 41º 50´N to 36º 10’N [west coast: 41.883, 36.167] and the parallels from 10º 30’ W and 7º 30’ W [south coast: -10.583, -7.33], with a distance from the coast ranging between 40 and 80 km, approximately corresponding to the location of the 1000 m isobath. Sampling stations were distributed along 16-18 sections perpendicular to the bathymetry.

Sampling Methods

For the qualitative and quantitative analysis of phytoplankton, 250 ml samples of seawater were collected and placed in brown plastic bottles. The samples were in situ preserved with 20% formalin, neutralized with hexamethylenotetramine (previously placed in the bottle), resulting in a final concentration of 0.4%.

Study Extent At each sampling station, depth levels of 0, 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 75, 100, 125, 150, 200, and 300 meters, or until the bottom, were sampled using "Nansen" bottles.
Quality Control In the laboratory, subsamples of 100 ml were placed to sediment in counting chambers for 72 hours.

Method step description:

  1. Phytoplankton enumeration was performed using the Utermöhl technique, on a ZEISS IM35 inverted microscope equipped with bright field and phase contrast.
